Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats today signed right-handed pitcher Garret Holleran to a contract and placed third baseman Tanner Townsend on the disabled list, retroactive to June 28, with a right hamstring injury. Friday, Yuki Matsumoto was transferred from the disabled list to the inactive list, retroactive to June 2, freeing a space on the disabled list for Townsend.

Holleran will be making his professional debut in 2008 with the RailCats, and will be in the bullpen and available starting Sunday. A two-year starter at Division I Wright State University, Holleran served as an assistant coach for the Raiders in 2008.

Tall and lean, Holleran played two seasons at Central Arizona College before enrolling at Wright State in 2006, and went on to make 26 starts in two years. Holleran won eight times in his Raider career and piled up 83 strikeouts in 153.0 innings. Holleran helped Wright State advance to the 2006 NCAA Regionals and was the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week, March 21 of that season.

Holleran was selected in the 35th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, but did not sign with the New York Mets.

Townsend was injured in Friday night's game while rounding first base on an eventual double in the eighth inning. The RailCats' leader in batting average, home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage and stolen bases, Townsend will be eligible to come off the disabled list Saturday, July 5. The Northern League All-Star Break begins two days later, with the All-Star Game to be held July 8 in Winnipeg.

The RailCats (23-17) are alone in first place in the Northern League and have won three straight games. The 'Cats will go for a three-game sweep of Schaumburg on Sunday at 1:20 p.m. at Alexian Field, with live coverage available on WEFM, 95.9 FM, and online at www.sportsjuice.com .
