Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

FARGO, N.D. - The RailCats signed infielder Christian Vitters prior to Saturday night's game against St. Paul. They also place left-handed pitcher James Adkins on the disabled list.

Vitters is playing professionally for the first time since 2009, when he was with High-A Stockton in the Oakland Athletics organization. That season he batted .216 with a career-high eight homers and 39 RBI in 82 games.

The left-handed hitter spent four seasons in the A's organization after they selected him in 10th round of the 2006 draft. He has a career average of .228 with a .298 on-base percentage.

The Anaheim, Calif. native played collegiately at Fresno State, where he was the WAC Player of the Year as a junior in 2006. That season, he hit .340 with 11 homers and 58 RBI. Vitters was also First-Team All-Wac in 2004 and named a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger.

Vitters is the older brother of Josh Vitters, who played in 36 games for the Chicago Cubs in 2012 and is now in Triple-A in the organization.

Adkins started Friday night's contest against St. Paul but left after two scoreless innings with an undisclosed injury. He is 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA in eight games and one start for the RailCats.

The RailCats play game three of a four-game series against St. Paul tonight at 6:10 p.m. The radio broadcast begins at 6:00 on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore and www.railcatsbaseball.com.
