Tough Night for Saints in 10-3 Loss to RailCats

GARY, IN - The St. Paul Saints hoped a couple of young rookies would have the answer on the mound, but it was not to be as they lost 10-3 to the Gary SouthShore Railcats on Saturday night at U.S. Steel Yard.

The Saints are without a fifth starter after Cole Nelson had his contract purchased by the Atlanta Braves, so they handed the ball to former St. Thomas grad Dylan Thomas. In the first inning the Railcats converted two walks into runs. Adam Klein led off with a walk. He advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch. Danny Pulfer walked with one out. Craig Maddox drove home the first run with a single to right to give the Railcats a 1-0 lead. Pulfer then stole third, one of five on the day for the Railcats, and with two outs Brian Kolb made it 2-0 with an RBI single.

In the second the Railcats once again got to Thomas. Chase Tucker led off with a single to center. With one out Mike Massaro walked. After a double steal, Pulfer singled both runners home to make it 4-0. With two out Christian Vitters made it 5-0 with an RBI single.

The Saints were able to get to former Saint pitcher Alain Quijano (2011) in the third. Mark Radmacher singled, Adam Frost reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and Joey Becker loaded the bases with a single. The single by Becker extended his hit streak to eight games. With one out Willie Cabrera single to right that scored two runs. Massaro's throw to third bounced off of Kolb and allowed Becker to score making it 5-3. That would be all Quijano would allow as he tossed a complete game allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four.

Saints starter Dylan Thomas settled down and didn't allow a run in his final two innings of work going 4.0 innings allowing five runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out three.

The Saints turned the ball over to another rookie, Billy Soule, the University of Minnesota grad from this year. He pitched a scoreless fifth, but in the sixth the Railcats scored three off of him. Klein led off with a walk and moved to second on a ground out. With two outs Klein stole third and scored on a double from Maddox to make it 6-3. Vitters followed with an RBI double and he scored on Kolb's single to make it 8-3. Soule went 2.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking two.

The Saints have now lost four straight road games and have allowed double digit in runs and hits in five of their last eight games. The Saints are now 17-18, the first time they've been a game under .500 since they were 0-1.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. at U.S. Steel Yard. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (4-1, 2.92) against Railcats LHP Ari Ronick (3-2, 3.34). The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
