RailCats Acquire Veteran Outfielder Gillies from Ottawa Champions

GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced the acquiring of outfielder Tyson Gillies from the Ottawa Champions of the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball (Can-Am League) on Tuesday for left-handed pitcher Onas Farfan.

Gillies, an 11-year pro, batted .294 with 11 home runs, 12 doubles, 50 RBIs, 46 runs and eight stolen bases in 71 games with the Champions in 2017. In 2016, Gillies played for both the Kansas City T-Bones and the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League in his first season of Independent Professional Baseball. The outfielder batted a combined .254 with nine doubles, five triples, four home runs, 21 RBIs, 30 runs and four stolen bases in 60 games.

Gillies began his professional baseball career in 2007 with the Peoria Mariners of the Arizona League (AZL) after getting drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 25th round of the 2006 MLB Draft out of R.E. Mountain Secondary School in Langley, BC, Canada. Gillies recorded a single in his first professional at-bat on June 23rd against the AZL Angels and hit .255 with three doubles, two triples, eight RBIs and 11 stolen bases in 39 games before getting promoted to the Everett AquaSox (Class-A, Short Season).

Gillies opened the 2008 season with Everett before getting promoted to the High Desert Mavericks (Hi-A) after batting .313 with a .439 on-base percentage, six doubles, five triples, two home runs, 22 RBIs and 24 stolen bases in 61 games. A native of Vancouver, BC, Canaada, Gillies returned to High Desert in 2009 and was named to the All-Star Futures Game after batting a career-high .341 with a .430 OBP, 104 runs, 170 hits, 17 doubles, 14 triples, nine home runs, 42 RBIs and 44 stolen bases in 124 games.

Gillies was traded from the Mariners along with right-handed pitchers Phillippe Aumont and J.C. Ramirez to the Philadelphia Phillies on Dec. 16, 2009, for All-Star pitcher Cliff Lee. Gillies was assigned to the Reading Fightin Phils (Double-A) in 2010, hitting .238 with two doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and two stolen bases in 26 games. In 2011, Gillies appeared in just three games with the Clearwater Threshers before playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League. In 28 games with the Scorpions, Gillies hit .178 with one home run, four stolen bases and seven RBIs.

Gillies was placed on the Philadelphia Phillies 40-man roster on Nov. 18, 2011, and returned to Reading in 2012, batting .304 with 13 doubles, eight triples, four home runs, eight stolen bases and 24 RBIs in 68games. The outfielder spent 2013 between the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Triple-A) and Reading, batting a combined .241 with 10 home runs, 15 doubles, six triples, 29 RBIs, 17 stolen bases and 55 runs. Gillies returned to Lehigh Valley in 2014, hitting .214 two home runs, six doubles and three stolen bases in 43 games.

Gillies then signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres on Feb. 27, 2015. The outfielder was assigned to the San Antonio Missions (Double-A) and hit .259 with two home runs, 19 RBIs, three stolen bases, and 15 runs in 61 games.

Farfan was traded from the Cleburne Railroaders to the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Oct. 24, 2017, and then traded to Gary along with infielder/outfielder Mitch Glasser to partially complete the trade that sent RHP Charle Rosario to the Goldeyes on Aug. 10, 2017, for RHP Daniel Minor, Glasser, infielder Luis Diaz and cash. Farfan went 3-4 with a 5.83 ERA in 26 games (one start) for Cleburne last season. In 41.2 innings, the southpaw allowed 27 earned runs on 47 hits and 25 walks while striking out 28.

Farfan began his professional baseball career in 2014 after getting drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 21st round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Ridgewater Community College (Wilmar, Minn.). The left-hander spent parts of three seasons in the Twins minor league system, reaching as high as the Gulf Coast League Twins (Rookie Ball).
