RailCats Acquire Knuckleballer

GARY, IN - The Gary SouthShore RailCats added RHP Joe Zeller in a three-team trade with the Frontier Grey's and Fort Worth Cats prior to Wednesday's game with Wichita. In a corresponding move the team placed LHP Alain Quijano on the disabled list, retroactive to August 17, and transferred RHP Marco Gonzalez to the inactive list, retroactive to August 5.

Zeller is the player to be named later in the RailCats trade with Fort Worth in which they sent RHP Aaron Wilkerson to the 'Cats. To complete the trade, Fort Worth sent RHP Coleman Stevens to the Frontier Grey's.

Joe is a former 28th round draft pick in 2010 by the Chicago Cubs out of The Master's College. He spent three years honing his craft in the Cubs system and reached double-A Tennessee in 2012. In total, Zeller went 3-5 with a 3.56 ERA across four levels (low-A, single-A, high-A and double-A) in the Cubs system.

This season Joe has been pitching with the Frontier Grey's, a road-only team in the Frontier League, and has compiled a terrific season. In 18 appearances, 16 starts, he's gone 8-7 with a 3.23 ERA in 106 innings. On Saturday, in his most recent start, he threw seven and a third innings of scoreless baseball against Lake Erie and took a no-decision.

Quijano, who is tied for the league-lead in victories, last started on Friday night and left in the third inning after being struck on his left hand with a line drive.

Marco Gonzalez last appeared for the RailCats on August 4 will be eligible to be activated from the inactive list on September 5, in the event that the RailCats qualify for the playoffs.
