Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs News Release
ROANOKE, VA The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs scored a pair of goals in the second period to take a 2-1 lead but allowed four unanswered goals and fell to the Fayetteville FireAntz, 5-2, Friday night at the Berglund Center. Roanoke's loss extended its winless streak to eight games.
Fayetteville got on the board first in the opening period thanks to a Dawgs turnover in their own zone. Tayler Thompson fired a puck on net that Ryan de Melo stopped but Chris Porter buried the rebound to give the FireAntz a 1-0 lead.
Roanoke fought back in the second as Matt Chiarantano barreled down the left wing and threw a shot on Sean Bonar's net. Bonar got a piece of the puck but it slowly trickled past him and rolled over the goal line. Chiarantano's first professional goal tied the game at one.
The Dawgs would then take the lead just over five minutes later when Mike Driscoll sped past the defense on the attack. He veered toward the goal, deked to his backhand and slid the puck past Bonar to put the Dawgs on top, 2-1.
But that was the peak for the Rail Yard Dawgs as the FireAntz picked up a pair of goals late in the second. Chaumont beat de Melo with a slapshot from the right wing with just over two minutes to play in the frame to tie it at two. Joe Harcharik redirected a pass from Jake Hauswirth just 51 seconds later, giving Fayetteville the lead for good.
Chaumont added a second goal in the third and Joe Kalisz capped the scoring to make it 5-2. Fayetteville out-shot Roanoke, 32-30. de Melo made 27 saves on the 32 shots that he faced.
The Rail Yard Dawgs return to the Berglund Center ice on Saturday at 7:05 PM for the team's first annual Teddy Bear Toss game. The Dawgs will host the FireAntz, their third consecutive game against Fayetteville. Tickets are available for purchase at Berglund Center box office and online at http://bit.ly/RYDTeddyBearToss.
