LAST TIME OUT: Colin Murray scored for the third consecutive game, Dillan Fox had a goal and an assist and Jacob Caffrey made 28 saves on 30 shots as the Rail Yard Dawgs beat the Huntsville Havoc, 4-2, Friday night at the Von Braun Center.
THE OTHER GUYS: Huntsville is the defending President's Cup Champion; it defeated Peoria in the 2018 final, two games to one. The Havoc finished the 2017-18 regular season as the fourth seed in the SPHL with a 30-16-10 record and beat Mississippi, Macon and Peoria en route to the second championship in franchise history. The Rail Yard Dawgs faced the Havoc four times in the 2017-18 regular season and went 3-1-0.
SAVE THE PUCK: Jesse Schwartz recorded a milestone in the first period of Friday's 4-2 win in Huntsville as he netted his first professional goal. Schwartz was appearing in his third pro game- he missed seven on injured reserve after playing the season opener. The rookie played in 120 NCAA games at UCONN and had 15 goals during his college career.
ACTUALLY...SAVE TWO PUCKS: Jacob Caffrey made his first professional start on Friday night and stopped 28 of 30 shots en route to his first pro win. Caffrey is in his first full professional season out of Stevenson University, where he went 11-8-7 with a 2.46 GAA and .924 SV% during his senior year. Those numbers were good enough to earn him goaltender of the year honors in his conference.
REINFORCEMENTS: Roanoke's blue line got a big boost on Saturday morning when Travis Armstrong signed with the team. Armstrong had been in the ECHL with the Kalamazoo Wings before being released earlier this week. He has appeared in 37 games with Roanoke over the past two seasons around various call ups to the ECHL. Armstrong had five goals over 15 games for the Dawgs last year and also appeared in 49 combined games with the ECHL's Quad City Mallards and Adirondack Thunder. To make room for Armstrong on the roster, forward Lane King was placed on waivers.
THE SEASON SERIES: Saturday's game represents the second of four scheduled meetings between the Rail Yard Dawgs and Havoc. Roanoke beat Huntsville on Friday night in its only scheduled trip to the Von Braun Center this season. The Havoc will visit Roanoke and Berglund Center once more this season for a pair of games February 15-16.
UP NEXT: Roanoke will stay at home for a pair of games next weekend against the Macon Mayhem. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM on both Friday and Saturday night.
