Raiders' Home Opener Is Saturday Night
April 9, 2014 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Richmond Raiders News Release
Last season, the Richmond Raiders and the Alabama Hammers proved to be the two best teams in the PIFL, squaring off for the league championship in July. This season, both squads have faced adversity in the early goings, and both come into Saturday night's rematch looking for their first win of the 2014 campaign. The Raiders' home opener will be First Responders night sponsored by Genworth and FOX Richmond. Ticket and concession specials, fire and police vehicles, new and expanded entertainment before and during the game, and free giveaways will add even more excitement and fun to the Raiders experience. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm this Saturday, April 12, at the Richmond Coliseum.
Last week the Raiders dropped a 42-21 decision to the Columbus Lions. The Raiders' defense registered five sacks and held the Lions to just three of 12 on third down conversions to keep the contest competitive for much of the night, but two late interceptions thrown by Steffen Colon enabled the Lions to pad their lead and close out the game. Colon entered the game in the second half and threw touchdown passes on each of his first two drives. Starter Malik White was pulled after being sacked for a safety, and Saturday's starter is expected to be a game day decision.
The Hammers opened their season with losses against the two American Conference expansion teams; the Nashville Venom and the Georgia Fire. In last week's contest against the Fire, Alabama got a PIFL record-tying 17 receptions and three total touchdowns from Charles McClain. The Hammers scored at the end of the game and went for a two point conversion to force overtime, but the Fire snuffed it out and got the first win in franchise history. Cecil Lester threw for 317 yards for Georgia.
Saturday's matchup will be on First Responders Night, when the Raiders will salute the dedication of these community heroes. The game is sponsored by Genworth and FOX Richmond. The first 1,000 fans in the doors will receive a free Touchdown Towel courtesy of Blue Ridge Exteriors. The brand new Fan Zone and Kids Zone on the concourse will offer entertainment, games, contests, and prizes for fans of all ages. Tickets are available in a buy 2, get 1 free package, as well as a family 4-pack which includes tickets, hot dogs, popcorn, and soft drinks all for one low price. Doors open at 5:30, so get to the Coliseum early for all the fun! Tickets start as low as $7, and are available on the Raiders' website, www.RichmondRaidersProFootball.com, or by calling 1-855-GO-RAIDERS or 804-780-0430. Additionally, fans can contact the Richmond Coliseum box office or visit ticketmaster.com.
