Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Rio Rancho, N.M. - The Rocky Mountain Rage lost their third game in a row overall and remain winless over their last 12 (0-10-2) on the road after losing to the New Mexico Scorpions, 4-3, at the Santa Ana Star Center in suburban Albuquerque.
Tied at one through 40 minutes, the game turned on a pair of special teams goals for the Scorpions in the first two minutes of the third period. New Mexico's Aaron MacInnis fired a slapshot past Rage netminder David Guererra 19 seconds into the final frame as his club skated on a four-on-three power play. Soon thereafter, Rocky Mountain found themselves with a two-man advantage. Instead of bidding to tie the game, though, the Scorpions' Mike Prpich got to a loose puck, raced up the right wing, and eventually batted in his own rebound for an unlikely three-on-five shorthanded tally.
The Rage would make a game of it late with a power play goal from Clay Plume at 17:06 to draw within 3-2, but New Mexico answered with an empty-netter at 18:51 to re-establish its two-goal margin. Rocky Mountain's John DiPace scored off a rebound with 40 seconds remaining, and the club generated more pressure by pulling Guererra again in the waning moments, but the back-breaking events earlier in the period proved too much to overcome.
Guererra's play throughout the first two periods gave the Rage an opportunity to win in the third as he stopped 30 of 31 shots, including many in acrobatic fashion. Anders Strome scored off a rebound 2:22 into the game to give Rocky Mountain an early 1-0 lead before New Mexico's Chris Robertson took a pass off the end boards to tie the game 5:28 into the middle period.
The loss drops the Rage to 6-12-2 with 14 points on the year. The team hasn't won away from Broomfield Event Center since an opening night win on Oct. 20 at the Budweiser Events Center against the Colorado Eagles.
Rocky Mountain will try to snap this three-game overall losing streak when they open their longest home stand of the season on Wednesday, Dec. 13, against the Oklahoma City Blazers at Broomfield Event Center at 7:05 p.m. in a game that will feature $1 Budweiser and Bud Light drafts.
