Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, WI - July 23rd, 2011 - Paul Schwendel and the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters used a four-run second inning to defeat the Green Bay Bullfrogs on Saturday night at Joannes Stadium. Schwendel pitched six shutout innings and the bullpen did not surrender another hit as the âFrogs were shutout for only the second time this season. âFrogs starter AJ Gaura took the loss as the Rafters snapped their three-game winning streak.
Gaura had come into the game with a 1.69 ERA, but was tagged for four runs in the second. Evan Stermer hit a one out double to right field and would later score on another double by Bart Steponovich. Justin Jirschele scored on an error by Ty Filliben and one batter later Luke Acosta singled to left field to score two more runs. In the sixth, the Rafters would tack on one more insurance run with a RBI single by Justin Jirschele.
Except for his second inning troubles, Gaura pitched well in the loss. After allowing his fourth run to score, Gaura retired the final eleven batters he faced. The Suamico native was able to locate the ball well, particularly his slider. The loss drops Gaura to 0-3 on the year with the âFrogs.
The 'Frogs never got their offense going as only three base runners were able to reach scoring position. Schwendel pounded the strike zone and never gave the Bullfrogs offense a chance to catch momentum. In the bottom of the second, the âFrogs had runners on second and third with two-outs, but Ty Filliben would ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning. The âFrogs best opportunity was in the sixth inning with runners on the corners and only one-out, but Phillip Ervin would strikeout swinging and Paul Hoenecke would be caught stealing for the third out. Schwendel struck out seven allowing just four hits in the six inning shoutout.
The âFrogs look to take the four game series against the Rafters on Sunday at 1:05 pm. It's a Bullfrogs youth jersey giveaway day with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. The first 500 kids 12 & under will receive a youth jersey along with another family day.
