Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release

La Crosse, WI - The Rafters ran into the Loggers at their sharpest Saturday. The La Crosse Loggers, winners of 12 of 13, shutout Wisconsin Rapids 3-0 at Copeland Park. The Rafters had just seven baserunners all game on just two hits and are now 5.5 games back of first place behind La Crosse.

Kyle Wormington put forth out his strongest start of the season. In his first start on the road, Wormington threw 6.2 innings of two-run ball against the highest scoring offense in the NWL South. One of the runs was unearned as well. Wormington struck out four Loggers and walked just one. The sole earned run came on a home run from Brandon Bednar making it 2-0 La Crosse in the fourth.

The Rafters offense was nearly silent on Saturday though. A mix of three different La Crosse pitchers kept the Rafters off-balance all evening. TJ Kendzora, Zach Wright, and Jonathan Van Eaton limited Wisconsin Rapids to only two hits. The Rafters had multiple base runners only once, when Colin Bray (FR, Univ. of South Alabama) and Jordan Dreiling (JR, Univ. of Kansas) both reached on error in the sixth. A double-play ended that threat.

Bednar knocked in his second run of the game in eighth, off of Seth Fuller (FR, Western Illinois Univ.) to give La Crosse a 3-0 advantage that would hold up as the final score.

Wormington (0-2) took the loss and Kendzora (2-0) got the win for his 5.1 scoreless innings. Van Eaton, who worked a perfect ninth, picked up his fifth save. He is tied for the division lead.

The shutout loss was the first time the Rafters have not scored a run in a game this year. It was also the second loss in a row for Wisconsin Rapids, coming off of a franchise-best eight-game winning streak.

Wisconsin Rapids (13-11) is off Sunday, the first off day of the season, before a three-game series against second place Green Bay (15-10). After traveling to Green Bay on Monday, the Rafters play home Tuesday and Wednesday. Both of those games at Witter Field will be at 7:05.
