Chicago Bandits News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Bandits ended a six-game losing streak with a 5-3 win against the Akron Racers, Saturday night at the Ballpark at Rosemont.
A fifth-inning rally gave the Bandits (10-13) the only lead they would need. After designated player Taylor Edwards (1-for-2, BB) was hit by a pitch, right fielder Danielle Zymkowitz (2-for-4, 3B, 2 RBI) tripled to tie the game at three. Three batters later, center fielder Sammy Marshall singled with a short chopper down the third base line to put the Bandits ahead 4-3.
Sara Moulton (W, 2-2), who collected the win in a 2.1 inning relief effort, said the Bandits had to get back to basics to get back in the win column.
"We talked a lot about that as a team just basic hitting, basic defense and basic pitching," she said. "You need two out of the three to win a game and we were finally able to string it all together today."
Zymkowitz's game-tying triple was her first of the year and just her second extra-base hit of the season. She has recorded 16 singles, however.
"[Zymkowitz] is our oldest vet, so you know she's one of the hardest workers on our team," Moulton said.
Pitching by committee finished off the Bandits win as Lacey Waldrop recorded one out and Michelle Gascoigne (SV, 2) finished off the last 1.2 innings.
The Racers (12-9) came out swinging against Angel Bunner - who signed with the team on Friday - and the first three batters of the game recorded singles. However, Bunner managed to maneuver out of the inning with minimal damage, allowing just two runs in the frame on RBI-singles from Kelley Montalvo and Sami Fagan.
Bunner escaped the inning (and a bases-loaded jam) by inducing a harmless fly out from Ashley Thomas.
"[Bunner is] another veteran, so she's got experience under her belt," Moulton said. "She's got good leadership and she's really [going to] help us."
The Bandits answered right back in their half of the first inning with two runs of their own. First baseman Brittany Cervantes (1-for-2, HR, 2 R) scored on an RBI single from second baseman Emily Carosone (2-for-4, RBI, R), who returned to the lineup after sitting last night. Two batters later, Zymkowitz drove in Carosone with a single through the right side.
Cervantes, who led off the game with a walk, has now scored in all seven games against the Racers this season. She also added an insurance run in the sixth inning with a solo home run, her third of the season.
Akron took a 3-2 lead on Chicago in the top of the fourth inning as Jennifer Gilbert smacked a two-out, RBI double to right field that scored Fagan, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Bunner was pulled in favor Moulton after the Racers loaded the bases in the third inning. Moulton got Taylor Schlopy swinging to get out of the jam.
Akron will travel to Conroe, Texas to take on the Scrap Yard Dawgs Monday, July, 4, in a two-game series before returning to Firestone Stadium to take on the Dawgs in another two-game set Friday, July, 8.
