MORNING HEADLINES

Monarchs Hope To Rebound- Union Leader

Just 16 seconds into the Eastern Conference Finals, things were suddenly even more difficult for the Manchester Monarchs. It's bad enough that Manchester had to open the best-of-seven series on Wednesday night against well-rested defending champion Hershey in front of nearly 8,000 amped-up fans.

Bears Take Opener Against Monarchs - Examiner.com

The Manchester Monarchs scored twice in the third period, but it wasn't enough in a 4-2 loss to the Hershey Bears in the first game of the Eastern Conference Final on Wednesday. Gabe Gauthier got his fourth goal of the playoffs and Andrei Loktionov got his first, but Manchester couldn't overcome the 3-0 lead Hershey built over the first two periods, the first of which came 16 seconds into the game.

MONARCHS CALDER CUP FUN FACTS

Who's Hot? - Monarchs center Gabe Gauthier is currently on a five-game point-streak with four goals and one assist for five points since April 30. Prior to his goal against the Worcester Sharks in game three of the Atlantic Division final to start the streak, the last time Gauthier put the puck in the net was on January 24, 2010 against the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Speed Kills - Defenseman Sean Collins' goal only 16 seconds after the opening puck drop in game one with the Hershey Bears set a new Monarchs franchise record for the fastest opening goal by an opponent in the playoffs. The previous record was held by left wing Martin Sonnenberg when he scored 21 seconds into the game on April 25, 2006 for the Hartford Wolf Pack. Manchester went on to win that game 8-6 following the rough start.

Leading The League - Four of the top five point leaders in the American Hockey League skate for the Hershey Bears. Left wing Alexandre Giroux is at the top with 18 points (10-8=18), followed by left wing Chris Bourque with 16 points (4-12=16), right wing Andrew Gordon with 15 points (10-5=15) and center Keith Aucoin with 14 points (1-13=14). All four of these players picked up a point in game one against the Monarchs on Wednesday night.

Did You Know? - Assistant Coach Scott Pellerin is the only current Monarchs player or staff member to have his name etched into the Calder Cup. Pellerin was a member of the 1995 Calder Cup Champion Albany River Rats.
