RHP Tanyon Sturtze (0-1 4.50) vs. RHP Jim Johnson (5-11 4.19)
TONIGHT'S GAME: Is the first of a four game home-and-home series and the ninth of 16 meetings; the fifth of eight at The Diamond. Richmond is 5-3 vs. the Tides, 2-2 at The Diamond. Richmond is 366-408 all-time vs. Norfolk. It is the 31st of 48 games vs. South Division opponents, the 15 of 24 at home. Richmond is 18-12 vs. the South, 8-6 at home. It is the fifth of a six game homestand (Richmond is 2-3). The Braves lead the South Division by a game over second-place Durham.
LAST NIGHT'S RAINOUT: The Braves and Toledo Mud Hens were rained out after one inning at The Diamond last night. The Braves had a 1-0 lead after one inning on an RBI single by Brayan Pena. The game will not be made up and last night's stats will not count. The Braves will now have a 141 game regular season. Last night's rainout was the ninth weather postponement of the season and the fourth at The Diamond. It was the Braves first home rainout since May 16 and their first overall since June 4
GOING SOUTH: The Braves play the rest of their regular season schedule (18 games) against South Division opponents. The Braves finished the season with winning records vs. the North (27-19) and the West (24-23). 10 of the Braves final 18 games are at The Diamond, including eight of their last 10.
THE PENNANT CHASE: The Braves have six games remaining with second place Durham (four on the road and two at home). Richmond has held first place every day since April 10. The Braves opened up a club record 10 game lead May 18. They have spent only one day out of first place since opening the season. If the Braves qualify for the playoffs, either as the South Division champion or Wild Card, they would open the post season with games one and two at The Diamond September 5 and 6.
ON THE LEADER BOARD: The Braves lead the IL in batting average (.272), ERA (3.58), most shutouts (13), and fewest home runs allowed (78). They are second in steals (128). Richmond also leads in on-base percentage (.344). Gregor Blanco is fourth in the league in runs scored (68). Martin Prado, now with Atlanta, is third in batting average (.320). The Braves are tied for second in the IL in fielding percentage (.982 with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre). Their 81 errors are the fewest in the IL. Richmond leads the league in percentage of opponents caught stealing (67-158 .424).
NUMBERS OF NOTE: The Braves have made 115 roster moves this season. Eight current members of the R-Braves have played in the majors this season (Brayan Pena, Pete Orr, Kevin Barry, Blaine Boyer, Joey Devine, Chad Paronto, Jo-Jo Reyes, and Royce Ring).
TRACKING THE PROMOTIONS: Of the 14 players promoted from Richmond to Atlanta this season, eight are currently in Atlanta. Yunel Escobar is hitting .319 with one HR and 20 RBI in 58 games, Willie Harris is hitting .326 with 1 HR and 25 RBI in 86 games, Martin Prado is hitting .257 in 13 games, Corky Miller is hitting .286 in four games, Peter Moylan is 4-2 1.92 in 54 games, Buddy Carlyle is 7-4 4.39 in 15 games, Lance Cormier is 0-2 13.50 in four games, and Manny Acosta is 0-0 0.00 in two games.
A BUSY POST SEASON?: Four clubs in the Atlanta organization are in the thick of pennant races, or have already wrapped up playoffs spots. Atlanta is three and a half games out of first in the NL East and just a game and a half out in the NL Wild Card hunt. Mississippi won a first half division crown in the Southern League and will participate in the playoffs. The R-Braves are looking for their second division title in four years. The Danville Braves have a 10 game lead in their division in the Appalachian League and are on the verge of wrapping up their third straight playoff trip. The D-Braves are the defending Appy champs.
