TONIGHT'S GAME: The third of a four game series and the third of eight meetings with the SkyChiefs, the third of four at The Diamond. Game seven of an eight game homestand (Richmond is 3-3). The Braves were 2-6 vs. the SkyChiefs last season, 0-4 at The Diamond. This is the 23d of 48 games vs. North Division opponents, Richmond is 9-13 vs. the North. The 15th of 24 home games vs. North Division opponents (Richmond is 8-6). Braves are 337-303 vs. the SkyChiefs all-time. The Braves are in a third place tie with Norfolk in the South, 15.5 and a half games behind first place Charlotte. The SkyChiefs are sixth in the North, nine games out of first.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Braves beat the SkyChiefs 8-2 Friday at The Diamond. The Braves blew a close game wide open, sending 11 men up in the sixth inning, paving the way for a second straight win over Syracuse. The SkyChiefs grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on back to back home runs by Sergio Santos and Kevin Barker. The Braves bounced back with two in the home half on an error and a sac fly by Carlos Mendez. Richmond erupted in the sixth. Jamal Strong singled two runs home. Scott Thorman knocked in a run with a double. Martin Prado, James Jurries, and Dax Norris had RBI singles. Meanwhile, Syracuse did not have a runner past second base after the first inning. Ricardo Rodriguez pitched seven innings to earn the win. David Purcey took the loss. Prado, Mendez, and Strong all had two hits for the Braves. Barker had two hits for Syracuse.
OF STREAKS OF MEN: Bill McCarthy has hits in seven straight games (11-25 .440). Cesar Crespo has a seven game hitting streak (9-23 .391). Scott Thorman has hits in four straight games (5-16 .313). Michael Ryan has hits in three straight games (4-11 .363). Martin Prado has hits in three straight games (4-12 .333). Carlos Mendez is four for his last seven RHP Phil Stockman has worked his last 13 innings without allowing a run and permitting just two hits. He has not allowed a run over 10 innings in five appearances on the road. All three runs allowed by Stockman came in one appearance. He did not allow a run in 7.2 Double-A innings before coming to Richmond. RHP Kevin Barry continues to dominate as a starting pitcher. Barry has not allowed a run in his last four starts over 25 innings. The only earned run he has allowed in his last 35 innings came in an extended relief stint May 24.
LEADERS OF THE PACK: Kevin Barry is fifth in the IL in ERA and tied for fourth in strikeouts. Wes Timmons is fourth in batting average (.316). He leads the league in on base percentage (.428). Timmons is currently on the DL and has been out of the lineup since May 16 due to a fractured thumb. Scott Thorman is third in hits with 60. The Braves are second in the IL in stolen base percentage. They have swiped 45 and have been caught 13 times (77.6%). Charlotte leads the league at 79.3%.
CORINTHIAN LEATHER: The Braves are tied for third in the IL in fielding percentage. They are second in total chances. The Braves are on a pace to break the franchise record for fewest errors in a season (97 in 2004). Richmond has played three straight errorless games. The Braves have started at leas three players at every position except second base. Brayan Pena (now with Atlanta) leads IL catchers in fielding percentage (1.000 in 31 games).
K. JOHNSON DONE: OF Kelly Johnson underwent elbow surgery Thursday and will miss the rest of the season. Johnson ended a rehab stint with Richmond Tuesday. He hit .333 with a home run and seven RBI in 10 games with Richmond. He is the second player assigned to Richmond in 2006 who's season was curtailed by surgery, joining RHP Blaine Boyer.
