Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

SAN ANTONIO - The Hooks came one out from pitching their second straight shutout, but still topped the San Antonio Missions 5-1 behind the tandem of Carlos Quevedo and Jake Buchanan in front of 6,622 fans at Wolff Stadium Saturday.

Corpus Christi led 5-0 with one out in the top of the ninth, but a pair of Hooks errors led to Jake Blackwood scoring an unearned run to put San Antonio on the board.

Quevedo (2-4) started for Corpus Christi and tossed five shutout innings, scattering four singles to go with three strikeouts. It marked the second time this season the Venezuelan right-hander started and posted five scoreless frames.

The Hooks' offense supported him with some help from the Missions (32-28) defense in the first three innings. In the first George Springer reached on an error and later slid around a tag by San Antonio catcher Eddy Rodriguez on a Justin Maxwell sacrifice fly to give Corpus Christi an early 1-0 lead.

Jonathan Meyer led off the second inning with a double to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Rene Garcia reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on an error that allowed Meyer to score. Springer later knocked a base hit to plate Garcia and give the Hooks (38-23) a three-run cushion.

San Antonio starter Josh Geer was charged with just one earned run, as he went five innings in place of scheduled Missions starting pitcher Keyvius Sampson. Geer (2-3) walked one and struck out four.

Texas League ERA leader Jake Buchanan followed Quevedo on the mound for Corpus Christi and gave up just one hit and an unearned run in four innings of work to record his first save of the season. Buchanan's ERA now stands at 0.80, tops in all of minor league baseball.

Corpus Christi's offense sprang back to life in the sixth inning against the Missions' Matt Lollis, who came out of the bullpen to start the frame. Domingo Santana greeted him with his 11th home run of the season and Rene Garcia belted his third long ball of the two batters later. The Hooks led 5-0 after six innings.

Missions relief pitcher Kevin Quackenbush was impressive in his outing, striking out all four hitters he faced before San Antonio plated its lone run in the bottom of the ninth.

With the win and a victory by the Frisco RoughRiders over Midland Saturday, Corpus Christi's lead in the Texas League South stands at three games over Frisco with nine to play.

The Hooks and Missions square off again Sunday at 6:05, when Corpus Christi will send Bobby Doran (6-1, 3.32) and Nick Tropeano (1-4, 3.90) to the hill against San Antonio's Sampson (2-4, 3.63).
