
Quebec 4-run Rally in 9th Trips Pioneers 9-7

The Quebec Capitales ended the Pioneers 5-game winning streak with a 4-run rally in the 9th inning to knock off Elmira 9-7 in front of 1115 fans at Dunn Field on Star-Gazette Family Thursday.
Leading 6-5 heading into the 9th, RH Keith Forbes (0-1) allowed the 1st 5 Capitals to reach as his former team ruined his Elmira debut. Forbes pitched with Quebec before his release in late July.
Brian Cornelius hit a high chopper over a dran-in infield to plate Robbie Kison and Patrick Scalabrini with the tying and go-ahead runs giving Quebec a 7-6 lead.
It was the first time this season the Pioneers surrendered a late-lead. Previously at 34-0 when leading after 6 innings the Pioneers were the only team in the league to remain unbeaten in that category.
Quebec banged out 15 hits as they responded angrily following the 5-hit shutout they suffered a night previous by Greg Keagle.
Jon Cotton had 3 RBI's on the night including a 2-run HR (12th) off Chris Brown in the 7th inning that tied the game at 5-5 ad an rbi single in the 8th that increased their lead to 8-6. Cotton is the league's RBI leader with 66.
Rafael Alvarez e the Pioneers offensive attack with 3 doubles and 3 RBI's. Alvarez has 14 RBI's in his last 7 games. Michael Coleman added a solo HR in the 4th inning. Coleman has homered in consecutive gams and hit his 3rd since joining the Pioneers at the beginning of the homestand.
The league's top closer, Mark Cisar (1-1) got the win thwarting a late Pioneers comeback effort. Pedro Quero doubled in the 9th following a Coleman walk. Brian Jones sac-fly brought in Coleman to close the gap to 9-7 but Osmani Garcia flied out to deep left-center as the Pioneers left the potential tying runner stranded at the plate.
Elmira overcame a 3-2 deficit in the 45th with a 3-run rally that cam following a 2-out error by SS Robbie Kison. Rafael Alvarez blooped a 2-run double to shallow LF to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead and then scored on a Pedro Quero single to CF. Quero had a pair of RBI's on the night to to up his team-leading total to 47.
Sean Brummett started for Elmira and took a no decision (6ip, 8h, 3er, 1bb, 5k). Danny Prata for Quebec lasted 6.1ip, 9h, 6r, 3er, 0bb, 2k.
Elmira hits the road for a 6-game journey through Adirondack and Quebec. The Pioneers went 1-5 on this same road-trip allowing New Jersey to pull away with the first half title. LH Justin Stine (5-5) will start th Friday night opener at Adirondack with an earlier than usual 6:00pm start-time.
Elmira's next home game is next Thursday, August 22 in the first of a big 4-game series with rival New Jersey.
