Morehead City Marlins News Release
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C.- Stanford freshman Cal Quantrill, who will be joining the Marlins during the 2014 season, was named PAC-12 Freshman Player of the Year on May 28, after going 5-5 with a 2.92 ERA during the regular season for the Cardinal.
Quantrill, who was drafted out of high school in 2013 by the New York Yankees in the 26th round, is the third Stanford player to win PAC 12 Freshman Player of the Year in the past five years, with the other two being Kenny Diekroeger (2010) and Brian Ragira (2011).
Including his start on May 30 against Indiana State in the NCAA Regionals, where he pitched a complete game and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four, Quantrill has pitched to a 6-5 record and 2.75 ERA this season. Against PAC-12 teams, the 6-foot-3, 185 pound right-hander was 3-3 with a 2.49 ERA.
In his 16 starts during the regular and post season, Quantrill ranked 10th in the league in innings pitched (101.1), tied for fourth in strikeouts (90, average of eight per game), tied for sixth in complete games (2), eighth in opponents batting average (.216), and tied for first in starts (16). His 90 strikeouts were more than double that of any other player on Stanford's roster in 2014, and he was also the sole team leader in games started and innings pitched.
In his last three starts of the season against Washington State, Utah, and Indiana State, Quantrill tossed 25 innings and allowed just 12 total hits and two runs while striking out 24. He received the win in each of those starts.
Quantrill, along with fellow Stanford pitchers Chris Viall, Tyler Thorne and Griffin Weir, will be joining the Marlins after Stanford's academic semester ends on June 11.
