FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - It was bound to happen. After struggling to score runs in the first five games of the season, the SwampDogs put up nine runs in an exhibition Monday night against the Catawba Valley Stars of the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League, winning 9-3.

Things got going early for the Dogs, as they sent 11 men to the plate and scored five runs in the first inning, four coming with two outs. The big hit of the inning was a two-run single by third baseman Brandon Metoyer.

Metoyer would have a great game, finishing 2-4 with a double and five RBIs. He now leads the team with 9 RBIs on the season.

After the first inning five-spot, the Dogs got three more runs home with two outs in the second. Brandon Metoyer's bases-loaded double plated all of those runs.

Staked to an 8-0 lead, Ryan Stinar was on cruise control. He retired the first eight batters to face him, and held the Stars off the scoreboard until the fourth inning.

A leadoff walk to right fielder Justin Paul followed up by singles from designated hitter Chris Paul and third baseman Trey Mathis brought in Paul.

Stinar would allow another run in the fifth as left fielder Ben Lott would lead off with a double and advance to third later on a wild pitch. He would come in to score when shortstop Kam Stewart robbed Ashley Morris of a hit on a groundball up the middle on a great diving play.

Stinar's final line for the game was five innings pitched, four hits, two runs, six strikeouts, and three walks.

The bullpen was stellar as usual, with Nick Hartman, Hasten Freeman and Norm Donkin combining to allow one unearned run over the final four innings.

The winning pitcher was Stinar, while Shane Murli was the loser for Catawba Valley. Murli only lasted 0.2 innings, allowing four hits, and five runs while walking three.

The SwampDogs head to Wilmington tomorrow night to take on the Sharks, before returning home on Wednesday, June 4th to host the Morehead City Marlins. For tickets contact the SwampDogs at 910-426-5900.

Check back tomorrow morning for audio highlights from the game.
