Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Quakes didn't waste much time grabbing a lead over Lake Elsinore. Peter Bourjos led off the 1st inning with a base hit to left and a stolen base got him into scoring position. Ryan Mount, with one out, then grounded a ball to first base where Sam Carter threw wildly to pitcher Ernesto Frieri covering, allowing Bourjos to score the game's first run.
In the 2nd, PJ Phillips led off with an infield single and went to second with one out on Alberto Rosario's walk. After Bourjos popped up to second, Erick Aybar singled to left to score Phillips from second to take a 2-0 lead.
Amalio Diaz cruised for the first two innings, but gave up a lead off home run to Kellen Kulbacki to start the third, which cut the lead in half. After a one out double by Jesus Lopez to left and an error allowed him to get to third on the play, Cedric Hunter followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Lopez to tie the game 2-2.
Lake Elsinore would take the lead on the Quakes in the fifth with two outs and a runner at third, Eric Sogard had a bunt single to score Lopez again to grab a 3-2 lead.
The score would stay that way until the 6th when Mark Trumbo, who had been just 1 for his last 16, sent a home run over the right field wall, his 16th of the season to tie the game 3-3.
The Quakes took the lead in the 8th with one out as Ryan Mount walked, Mark Trumbo singled to center to get Mount to third and Hank Conger followed with a game winning sacrifice fly to center field to score Mount, which gave Rancho a 4-3 lead.
David Herndon came in for the ninth and gave up a one out single, but retired the Storm in order after that and converted his third save in as many tries. Starter Amalio Diaz went 7.2 innings, a season high for any starter, but did not factor in the decision as Barret Browning came in relief in the 8th with a runner at first and two outs and threw one pitch to get out the inning and pick up the win.
Rancho will try and take the series Wednesday night with Jeremy Haynes on the mound against right hander Corey Kluber of the Storm. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
