Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes scored four times in the eighth inning off Stockton closer Paul Smyth, rallying for a 5-2 win over the Ports on Sunday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
Angel Castillo and Kevin Ramos both had key run-scoring hits in the eighth inning, helping the Quakes to end a brief two-game losing streak.
Leading 2-1 in the top of the eighth, Stockton removed starting pitcher Shawn Haviland in favor of left-handed reliever Trey Barham. Barham did his job, striking out left-handed hitting Rian Kiniry for the first out of the eighth. Barham was then removed for the Stockton closer.
Smyth (3-4) entered the game and immediately struggled, walking Mike Trout to put the tying run aboard. Alberto Rosario followed with a single, sending Trout to third. With runners at first and third, Luis Jimenez softly lined out to short, for the second out. On a 3-2 pitch, Gabe Jacobo swung and missed at a pitch that was in the dirt and all the way to the backstop. On the play, Trout scored to tie the game at 2-2, while Jacobo reached first to extend the inning. After Clay Fuller was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Castillo delivered a slow-roller to third, plating Rosario to give the Quakes a 3-2 lead. Ramos followed with a two-run single to give the Quakes some cushion at 5-2.
Jose Perez (1-1), who struck out two of three in the seventh, fanned all three men he faced in a perfect eighth. Eddie McKiernan followed by retiring all three batters he faced in a 1-2-3 ninth inning, earning his 19th save in 21 chances this year.
Quakes' starter Orangel Arenas pitched well, but allowed the Ports the early advantage.
A wild pitch with two outs in the first inning allowed Jermaine Mitchell to score, putting the Ports up 1-0.
Yusuf Carter made it 2-0 in the second, as he blasted his sixth homer of the year and second in as many days.
Arenas would allow just two runs on five hits over six innings in the no-decision.
Mike Trout crushed his first home run in a Quakes' uniform in the third, a solo shot to left-center field to bring the Quakes to within a run at 2-1 off Haviland.
The Quakes (14-10, 53-41) are now one game up in the South Division, over both Lake Elsinore and High Desert. Rancho Cucamonga looks for two of three over the Ports on Monday and four of six on the current road trip. Patrick Corbin (5-2) takes on Ben Hornbeck (2-2) at 7:05pm in the series-finale from Stockton.
On Tuesday, July 20th, the Quakes return to The Epicenter, opening a three-game home stand against Bakersfield. The upcoming home stand includes a GIVE Recycle Tuesday, an early-morning 10:35am game and a Buffalo Wild Wings Thirsty Thursday. Tickets can be purchased by calling (909) 481-5000 or anytime online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter on Saturday night...Go Quakes!
