Giants Cruise To 7-1 Victory Over JetHawks

Charlie Culberson had four hits and Giants relievers combined to allow just one run over the final 6 2/3 innings as San Jose cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Sunday evening at Clear Channel Stadium. Juan Perez added three hits and James Simmons collected three RBI's en route to the Giants' second consecutive win in the series. The victory improves San Jose's overall record to 54-40.

Culberson (4-for-5, SB) and Perez (3-for-4, 2B, RBI) led a 15-hit Giants offensive attack. Simmons (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI), Ehire Adrianza (2-for-5) and Johnny Monell (2-for-4, 2B, SB) also contributed two hits apiece.

Ryan Verdugo (1-0) earned his first win since joining San Jose after tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief with two hits allowed, one walk and four strikeouts. Verdugo relieved Eric Surkamp with one out in the bottom of the third inning after the All-Star starting pitcher suffered a hip injury as he attempted to field a ground ball.

The Giants jumped ahead early with three runs in the top of the second inning against Lancaster starter Dallas Keuchel. Culberson began the frame with a single before he was forced at second on Drew Biery's fielder's choice groundout. After Monell doubled into the right field corner advancing Biery to third, Matt Klimas was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Simmons followed with a ground ball single up the middle to bring home both Biery and Monell with the first two runs of the night. Klimas then scored when the next hitter, Perez, bounced into a fielder's choice.

Surkamp (2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) began his outing with a walk to Andy Simunic, but then retired the next seven JetHawks hitters that came to the plate. With one out in the bottom of the third, Brandon Wikoff hit a high chopper over the pitcher's mound that Surkamp attempted to make a play on, but was unsuccessful. Wikoff reached first base on an infield single and after throwing one warm-up pitch, Surkamp was removed from the game due to injury. Verdugo then entered the contest and quickly set down the next two hitters to finish the inning.

Lancaster threatened against Verdugo in the bottom of the fourth as Brian Pellegrini and Lee Cruz each singled to put runners on first and second with none out. However, Verdugo recovered to strikeout the next three hitters, Brandon Barnes, Federico Hernandez and Barry Butera, to pitch out of trouble. Verdugo then worked around a two-out walk in the bottom of the fifth to keep the Giants ahead by three runs.

San Jose added to their lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make it 5-0. In the top of the sixth, Culberson led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on Monell's groundout and scored with two outs when Klimas reached on an error. Then in the seventh, Perez began the inning with a single before scoring on Michael Sandoval's two-out single up the middle.

Lancaster scored their only run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning as David Flores doubled with one out against Edwin Quirarte and then scored on Simunic's two-out bloop single into right.

The Giants went ahead by a 7-1 margin with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. Monell started the rally with a one-out single before stealing second base. After Klimas grounded out, Simmons drove a double off the fence in center to plate Monell. Wendell Fairley then delivered an RBI single into right for San Jose's last run of the evening.

Quirarte (2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) worked the sixth and seventh innings out of the Giants bullpen before Brian Anderson (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) held the JetHawks scoreless over the last two frames.

Notes: San Jose improved to 4-1 on their current road trip ... The Giants are a perfect 13-0 in weekend road games this season (7-0 on Saturday's, 6-0 on Sunday's) ... Culberson is 7-for-9 (.778) in the first two games of the series ... He's batting at a .517 clip (15-for-29) during his current seven-game hit streak ... The JetHawks were 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position ... San Jose out-hit Lancaster by a 15-7 margin ... It is unknown at this time whether Surkamp will have to miss his next start ... The temperature at the start of the game was 105 degrees with 22 MPH winds blowing out to right field.

On Deck: The Giants conclude their road trip on Monday evening with the series finale against the Lancaster JetHawks. First pitch at Clear Channel Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Justin Fitzgerald (6-2, 3.45 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Lancaster is expected to counter with Kyle Greenwalt (3-6, 6.31 ERA).
