Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Lancaster JetHawks took advantage of tough day for the Rancho Cucamonga and defense, coming from behind to down the Quakes, 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon at The Epicenter.

Three unearned runs in the seventh inning snapped a 3-3 tie and sent Lancaster to their second straight win over the Quakes, giving them two of three in the series.

Tied at 3-3 in the top of the seventh, Freddie Cabrera, who had already allowed a two-run double in the sixth, gave up a one-out double, followed by a single, putting runners at first and third with one out. Erik Castro followed with a pop-up down the third-base line. Shortstop Charlie Mirabal mishandled it though, as it kicked out of his glove and allowed Adam Bailey to score the go-ahead run, giving the JetHawks a 4-3 lead. Telvin Nash came to the plate and hit a ground ball to third baseman C.J. Retherford, who's the throw to the plate couldn't be handled by Mike Pericht, allowing Domingo Santana to score, making it 5-3. Scott McGough came in out of the pen to relieve Cabrera (1-2), but his first pitch was lined to center field for a hit, as Rafael Valenzuela knocked in Castro to give the JetHawks a 6-3 lead.

Rancho got back in it in the last of the ninth, as reliever Kirk Clark gave up back-to-back doubles to open the inning, with Nick Akins knocking in Retherford to make it 6-4. But Clark struck out the next three hitters, as Pericht, Chris Jacobs and Jarrad Page all went down swinging, leaving the tying run at the plate to end the game, giving Clark his fourth save of the year.

The Quakes paced starter Brandon Martinez to an early lead, as the first three hitters all doubled to open the game against Lancaster's Bobby Doran. Leon Landry, Joc Pederson and Scott Wingo each collected a two-bagger, as the Quakes took an early 2-0 advantage.

Martinez was solid in his five innings, allowing just a second-inning run, when Alex Todd doubled home Valenzuela to make it a 2-1 game.

Doran (4-2) settled down after the three straight doubles, retiring 15 in a row thereafter and holding on for the win.

The Quakes host the first-place High Desert Mavericks on Thursday, in the opening game of a three-game series. Angel Sanchez (2-2) goes for Rancho, while the Mavs will send George Mieses (1-3) to the bump, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. Thursday is a Buffalo Wild Wings Thirsty Thursday, as fans can enjoy $2 16-oz domestic drafts and $2 20-oz Pepsi Products throughout the night.
