San Jose Earthquakes News Release

SAN JOSE (Thursday, September 15, 2005) - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has promoted defender Kevin Goldthwaite to a senior roster spot for the remainder of the season, while also claiming former UC-Santa Cruz standout Aaron Lanes off waivers and signing him to a developmental contract prior to today's 2:00 p.m. PT MLS roster freeze deadline. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deals were not announced.

Goldthwaite, 22, was drafted by the Earthquakes with the 17th overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft and started the season as a developmental player on the Quakes roster. The former Notre Dame star has played in seven reserve league matches for San Jose and the Quakes two U.S. Open Cup games as well as an international friendly against Spain's Deportivo Alaves. He was loaned to the Portland Timbers of the USL-First Division after the all-star break. With Portland, Goldthwaite has played in 10 games, and will return to the Quakes immediately following the end of the Timbers season in the USL playoffs and will claim the senior roster left open when Wes Hart placed on waivers on August 3.

Lanes, 22, joins the Quakes as a developmental player, after spending time training with the club and appearing in three reserve games as a guest player. A former star at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, CA, Lanes led UC-Santa Cruz to a 22-2 record and a second place finish in the NCAA Division-III Championship Game as a senior last season. The captain of the team and a 2005 NSCAA All West Region second team selection, Lanes is a tough-minded midfielder who was named the Association of Division III Independents Defensive Player of the Year.
