Wolves 39, Steamwheelers 41
(Manchester, N.H.) - The Quad City Steamwheelers came up with their biggest win of the season with a 41-39 victory over the Manchester Wovles' snapping their 10-game winning streak and sending the 'Wheelers back to the .500 mark for the first time since Week Seven.
Travis Burns had three touchdowns, two rushing and one on a kickoff return, and also intercepted a pass to lead the Steamwheelers to their second straight win and first road win since April 23 in Oklahoma City. Burns' pick was one of three forced by Quad City on the night, allowing it to finally pull out a final minute victory after suffering a string of excruciating defeats.
Turnovers were the story of the opening half as the Steamwheelers came up with a pair of interceptions, but gave the football away twice themselves, once on an interception and once on a fumble. After each team found the end zone with their opening possession, Quad City looked to have taken the early advantage when DeOnte' Taylor came up with his second interception in as many weeks. Manchester quarterback, Jake Eaton attempted to lob a pass to the corner of the end zone, but Taylor outjumped the Wolves' Heyward Skipper to come up with the pick.
Sam Clemons hit Jack Walker Jr., with a 19-yard touchdown pass on the ensuring drive to give the 'Wheelers their first lead of the contest. Manchester answered this score with one of their own to make the score 13-12.
The Steamwheelers looked to stretch their lead following the Wolves' score, but saw their drive quickly snuffed out when Tim Dodge fumbled the football inside his own 10-yard line. Manchester recovered the loose ball but was unable to add to their lead as the Quad City defense held strong and forced a field goal attempt. The Wolves tried to fake the kick, but to no avail as Travis Burns intercepted the Jake Eaton pass in the back of the end zone to give the ball back to the 'Wheelers.
However, the turnover bug came back to bite the Steamwheelers again as Clemons' pass to Travis Burns in the back right corner of the end zone was intercepted by Jamaal Perry.
Manchester took the ball downfield following the Perry interception and finally pulled back in front as Eaton hit J.J. McKelvey with the third of his four scores on the night, giving Manchester a 25-13 halftime advantage.
The Steamwheelers defense continued to impress in the second half, holding the Wolves scoreless in the third quarter, while the offense came up with a touchdown of its own on a one-yard Burns run, cutting the Wolves lead to 25-20 after three, setting up the dramatic final 15 minutes.
Jeff Hewitt and Marc Bacote traded touchdown scores before Burns tallied a 55-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, his second straight return for a score in as many weeks, giving the 'Wheelers a 35-32 lead with 5:25 left. Eaton hit McKelvey with another short touchdown pass with 2:50 left in the game to put Manchestre back in front, but Quad City showed that it had learned from its past defeats by driving down the field for the game-winning score.
LAST GAME RESET
Albany Conquest @ Quad City Steamwheelers
June 3, 2006
OS Field at The MARK of the Quad Cities
Conquest 62, Steamwheelers 71
(Moline, Ill.) - The Quad City Steamwheelers tallied their third win of the season with a 71-62 victory over the Albany Conquest.
The Steamwheelers had a big pick at the end of the first quarter and a fumble recovery for a touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter to setup the victory.
With the Steamwheelers holding a 10-7 advantage near the end of the first quarter Jack Walker Jr., who finished the game with 48 yards and three touchdowns on six receptions, picked off a Conquest pass by quarterback Ryan Vena in the end zone setting up a Tim Dodge 30-yard touchdown reception to give Quad City a 17-7 lead. Just three plays later, in the second quarter, Quad City extended the lead when Kika Kaululaau recovered a Vena fumble in the end zone to put the Steamwheelers up 24-7.
The two teams traded touchdowns the remainder of the second quarter and combined for 87 points in the half. On the final play of the half Vena, who finished with 323 yards and seven touchdowns on 37 attempts, threw a 26-yard pass to Bakari Brown. With the pass Vena became the 10th player in the af2 to surpass the 10,000-yard career passing mark.
With Quad City holding a 52-35 halftime lead the Conquest would fight back near the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth with two straight scores. Kendri Bournes rushed the ball for one-yard into the end zone to complete a four play 38-yard drive to make it a 58-49 game.
After a huge goal line stand by the Conquest, forcing the Steamwheelers to turn the ball over on downs, Vena hit Jim Jones for his third touchdown catch of the night pulling Albany to within two at 58-56. With just under five minutes remaining Jack Walker Jr., caught his third touchdown pass of the night on an eight-yard pass from Steamwheelers quarterback Tim Hicks to give Quad City a 64-56 advantage.
The Conquest answered with a four-play 35-yard drive that lasted 3:19 when Bettendorf native Thomas Anthony rushed for a two-yard touchdown with only 1:26 left in the game once again pulling Albany to within two.
With the Steamwheelers clinging to a 64-62 lead thanks to a missed two-point conversion try by the Conquest, Jim Macrea would give the Steamwheelers the victory at 71-62 with a four-yard run with just 33 seconds remaining on the clock.
Hicks finished the game with 303 yards and six touchdown passes and no interceptions on 31 attempts. Patrick Horne led the Steamwheelers defense with 8.5 tackles (8 solo, 1 assisted). For the Conquest DeOnte Taylor finished the game with five tackles (4 solo, 2 assisted), while Anthony finished with a team-high 107 receiving yards on seven catches.
