QC Stays Hot With Fifth Straight Win
June 3, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Brandon Buckman's 12th home run of the year propelled the Swing of the Quad Cities to a 4-2 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Buckman used the fifth-inning blast to move back into sole possession of the Midwest League lead for home runs and RBI (47).
Quad Cities (32-24) extended their season-best winning streak to five games, moving a season-high eight games over .500 despite playing through persistent rains throughout most of the afternoon. Wisconsin (17-38) managed to hold the Swing to just three hits, but Buckman's two-run homer and a pair of run-scoring hits by Daryl Jones were all the Swing would need.
Neither team had recorded a hit through the first four innings of the ballgame, but the Swing changed that in the top of the fifth. Trailing 1-0, Tommy Pham was hit by a pitch and promptly scored on a double down the first base line by Jones. One out later, Buckman turned on a 2-2 pitch and slugged it over the fence in right for his 12th bomb of the year, giving the Swing a 3-1 lead.
Wisconsin scored another run in the bottom of the fifth, but Quad Cities got it right back in the top of the sixth. After a pair of walks put two men on with two outs, the Timber Rattlers brought southpaw Mike Wagner out of the bullpen to face the left-handed Jones. But the Swing 19-year-old greeted him with a base hit through the right side of the infield, giving Quad Cities a 4-2 lead with his second RBI of the game.
That was enough for the Swing bullpen, as tandem starter Brandon Dickson and closer Kenny Maiques held the Timber Rattlers scoreless the rest of the way. Dickson allowed just the one fifth-inning run over four solid innings, fanning three while allowing four hits. Maiques struck out one and allowed one hit in the ninth to convert his fourth consecutive save opportunity, raising his total to 13 on the year.
Mike Schellinger (2-2) picked up the win after tossing a perfect fourth inning in relief of starter Blake King.
King struck out six and did not allow a hit over three innings of work, but walked five and gave up one run.
That run came in the very first inning. Alex Meneses drew a walk to open the inning, and after stealing second and third base he crossed the dish on a wild pitch. King faced seven batters in the frame and walked four of them, but also struck out three as Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead.
