Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL. - The Kane County Cougars took an early 3-0 lead Saturday night, fell behind later, tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a homer by Jermaine Mitchell but lost 7-6 in 11 innings against the Clinton LumberKings in front of 8,037 fans at Elfstrom Stadium.

Mitchell, Haas Pratt and Greg Dowling each had a run-scoring single in the first against Zach Phillips for a quick 3-0 Cougars lead. Starter James Heuser battled through 5 2/3 innings in the no-decision. He gave up one in the second, surrendered two-run homers in the fourth and fifth and yielded an unearned run in the sixth for a 6-3 deficit. He departed in the sixth after giving up six runs -- four earned -- on seven hits, walked one and struck out three. Branden Dewing kept the Cougars close with 3 1/3 innings of three-hit shutout relief.

Alex Valdez launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-5, setting up Mitchell's one-out solo blast in the ninth off John Slusarz, which just barely stayed inside the foul pole and sent the crowd into a frenzy. The L'Kings scored in the 11th against closer Scott Moore (0-4), who took the loss after Tim Gudex worked a 1-2-3 bottom half for his third save. Slusarz (1-2) got the win.

The Cougars (15-40) and LumberKings (32-21) continue their four-game series Sunday night at 6 CDT when Henry Rodriguez (1-2, 3.24) squares off against Broc Coffman (4-0, 3.33).
