Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels managed only four hits in game one of a doubleheader in Burlington on Saturday night at Community field, but two of the hits were two run home runs, one by Hank Conger and the other by Chris Pettit, as the Kernels won 4-3.

Kernels starter Tim Schoeninger (8-2) allowed three runs on six hits and struck out eight as he picked up the complete game win.

Ryan Mount and Mark Trumbo had the other two Kernel hits.

Pettit's homer came in the top of the first to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead. It was his seventh home run of the season.

Conger's home run was his eighth of the season and came in the top of the fourth to give the Kernels a 4-1 lead.

Burlington cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth on their own two run homer by Jase Turner. However, Schoeninger worked around a Chris McConnel double later in the fifth and retired the Bees in order the remainder of the game.

Game two of the DH was postponed until Sunday due to rain. The DH begins at 2 pm from Community Field in Burlington.
