Watertown Privateers News Release
ALEXANDRIA BAY, NY - The 1000 Islands Privateers saw familiar faces across the ice Friday night. The match-up with first-place Akwesasne has fostered a strong rivalry between the two Federal Hockey League franchises. The Privateers worked through another deficit to defeat the Warriors 4-2 before 423 at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center, making the back end of the home-and-home at Akwesasne a first-place showdown.
Akwesasne began the game as they have so often against 1000 Islands, seizing an early lead. Darick Ste. Marie and Joshua Desmarias tallied one minute, 10 seconds apart in the first period to stake the Warriors to the lead. Nicholas Filion stopped all 11 Privateer shots in the first, including some breakaways. The Privateers answered with goals from defensemen in the second period. Nick Laporte, back in the lineup, scored his first professional goal, assisted by his twin brother Will, recently re-acquired from the Rome Frenzy, and Harry Mahesh. Mike Byrd lit the lamp just 11 seconds later to tie game off feeds from Clay McFadden and Marcus Pryde. The Warriors fired 15 shots at Richard Sillery but the newly-crowned starting goaltender turned all aside. The third period started with the score drawn and tension high. Byrd threw an outlet pass to Nikita Poliakov, who rifled it over Filion's shoulder and sent the Thunderstick-toting crowd into frenzy. January's Player of the Month Alex Goupil netted his league-leading 37th goal with helpers going to McFadden and Tyler Fernandez. Sillery stopped 26 of 28 for the win, his second in as many games, and the team's fourth-straight hosting Akwesasne. The Privateers cut the Warriors' lead to one-half game, and first place will be on the line as the teams play tomorrow night at 7 PM in Akwesasne.
Akwesasne will visit Bonnie Castle again on Thursday, February 10th. The team will honor the men and women who serve the North Country for 1st Responders Appreciation Night. Discount tickets will be available to those in uniform.
