The 1000 Islands Privateers saw familiar faces across the ice Friday night. The match-up with first-place Akwesasne has fostered a strong rivalry between the two Federal Hockey League franchises. The Privateers worked through another deficit to defeat the Warriors 4-2 before 423 at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center, making the back end of the home-and-home at Akwesasne a first-place showdown.
Akwesasne began the game as they have so often against 1000 Islands, seizing an early lead. Darick Ste. Marie and Joshua Desmarias tallied one minute, 10 seconds apart in the first period to stake the Warriors to the lead. Nicholas Filion stopped all 11 Privateer shots in the first, including some breakaways. The Privateers answered with goals from defensemen in the second period. Nick Laporte, back in the lineup, scored his first professional goal, assisted by his twin brother Will, recently re-acquired from the Rome Frenzy, and Harry Mahesh. Mike Byrd lit the lamp just 11 seconds later to tie game off feeds from Clay McFadden and Marcus Pryde. The Warriors fired 15 shots at Richard Sillery but the newly-crowned starting goaltender turned all aside. The third period started with the score drawn and tension high. Byrd threw an outlet pass to Nikita Poliakov, who rifled it over Filion's shoulder and sent the Thunderstick-toting crowd into frenzy. January's Player of the Month Alex Goupil netted his league-leading 37th goal with helpers going to McFadden and Tyler Fernandez. Sillery stopped 26 of 28 for the win, his second in as many games, and the team's fourth-straight hosting Akwesasne. Only "Kid"ding Cape Cod - Alec Kirschner Tricks Barons
Danbury, Connecticut - The Whalers scored a franchise record 10 goals in dispatching the Cape Cod Barons in a game that seemed tight for most of the 1stperiod, but turned into a laugher for the last 40 minutes of play. For the second time in a week Danbury tallied seven unanswered goals against the Barons on way to their 15thwin in 19 home games. Led by Alec Kirschner's three goals, the Whalers scored 10 times on 46 shots.
The Barons got on the board first at the 4:30 mark when Steve Romanin intercepted an errant Whaler pass at center ice, skated in and beat Nick Niedert on the left side. The Whalers struck right back, when Alec "Kid" Kirschner raced down the right side, threading a passing to Chris Seifert in front, who ringed the puck around the goal for the tying score at 8:12. At 14:04 Danbury took the lead, 2-1, when Kid Kirschner banged home a shot that had been fought out of a corner. The seesaw battle continued when just two minutes later Cape Cod tied things up, 2-2, on a David Lawrence power play goal. Less than a minute after that at 17:03 the Danbury Ice Arena crowd was stunned as the Baron's Andrew Hutton chipped in a loose puck that Niedert previously blocked twice, for a 3-2 Cape Cod lead. Alas for the Baron's the lead was fleeting as Kid Kirschner knotted the score back up with only 1:29 remaining in the period, putting in his own rebound for his second goal of the night.
The second period was all Danbury. Andrew Willock put the Whalers in front to stay at 3:18 as he batted in a Sean O'Malley shot that had ricocheted about 20 feet straight up over Baron goalie Chris Testa. At 9:25 the score become 5-3 Danbury when Marty Moucha netted a shorthanded goal from the left side, and a mere 13 seconds later the previously tight game started to take on the look of a rout as Devon Guy blasted a shot from the point that was deflected in by Igor Karlov for a 6-3 lead. As the Whalers continued to dominate the offensive end of the rink, at 16:05 Marty Moucha fed Adam Blanchette for a slap shot goal and a 7-3 lead going into the lockerrooom.
In the third period Karlov picked up his second goal of the night, Kirschner completed the hat trick and Devon Guy, coming back off an injury, scored for the first time since November 27th.
The Whalers are now 15-3-1 at the Danbury Ice Arena.
