Prince George Cougars News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that 2019 NHL Draft prospect Taylor Gauthier of the Prince George Cougars has been named the WHL Eli Wilson Goaltending Goaltender of the Week and league nominee for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending January 13, 2019.
Playing in four games this week, Gauthier posted a 3-1-0-0 record, 1.26 goals-against-average, stopped 97 of 102 shots for a 0.951 save percentage, and recorded two shutouts as the Cougars wrapped up a road trip and made their triumphant return home with a weekend sweep of the Kelowna Rockets at the CN Centre.
Gauthier's week began with a 36-save shutout against the Tri-City Americans, where he stopped 13 shots in the first, 14 in the second, and nine more in the third for the victory as the Americans went 0-for-3 on the power play. Gauthier was named the first star of the game and the first star of the night in the WHL for his efforts.
After stopping 23 of 26 shots in a 4-2 loss to the Spokane Chiefs the next night, Gauthier returned home with his club for a pair of games against the Rockets. In the first game of the weekend, Gauthier stopped 18 of 20 shots in a 7-2 win for the Cougars. That performance was followed up with a 20-save shutout in a 4-0 win against the Rockets, where the Rockets went 0-for-5 on the power play.
The Calgary, Alta. product has impressed in his second season with the Cougars, posting a 12-15-1-1 record, 2.94 GAA, 0.905 SV%, and three shutouts. Gauthier's three shutouts this season put him halfway to tying the franchise record set by Scott Bowles during the 2005-06 WHL Regular Season. He's also a quarter of the way to tying Real Cyr's mark of 12 for the most shutouts in franchise history.
Originally selected ninth overall by the Cougars at the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, Gauthier has appeared in 64 WHL regular season games, posting a 20-33-2-3 record, 3.43 GAA, 0.895 SV%, and three shutouts.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound goaltender is one of three goaltenders to receive a 'B' rating from NHL Central Scouting ahead of the 2019 NHL Draft in their 'Players to Watch' List. Gauthier played a part in Alberta capturing the 2016 WHL Cup and won gold with Canada at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup last August.
In the midst of a six-game home stand, the Cougars will play host to the Prince Albert Raiders Wednesday, January 16 (7:00 p.m. PT).
