Storylines
(All Too) Familiar Foes: If fans find themselves feeling as if they're experiencing déjà vu, there should be no worry. The second meeting of 2024 between the Red Stars and the Reign comes just three NWSL matchdays after Seattle visited the Windy City for Chicago's home opener. The last time the Red Stars and the Reign met prior to 2024 was October 15, 2023; the final regular-season match for both sides. History between the two teams goes back even further for the long-time NWSL fan, as Chicago and Seattle were founding NWSL clubs who faced off against each other in their inaugural NWSL match April 14, 2013. Sunday's meeting will be the 32nd time the two clubs have met and the chips between them fall almost evenly, with each side having 11 wins, 11 losses, and 8 draws. Who will claim a 12th victory first?
Stacking Up Against Seattle: stat opta comparison to come Since the Red Stars most recent 2-1 win over Reign in Chicago's home opener, the statistical gap has continued to widen between the two teams. The Red Stars have scored more goals than the Reign (five to Seattle's four) from more individual goal scorers (Chicago's five to Seattle's two), have a higher conversion rate on their chances (17.86 percent to 13.33 percent), have more goal contributions (four assists to one), and they sit higher on the table, in fourth place compared to the Reign's 12th place. Defensively, the Red Stars have not only allowed opponents less shots at the goal than the Reign (14 to Seattle's 16), but Chicago has also conceded fewer goals (three to six) and has a high rate of tackles won (66.70 percent to 64.60 percent). While Seattle have home field advantage, the Red Stars remain undefeated on the road this season. A win Sunday would give Chicago the club's most points ever through three road games (surpassing five in 2015 and 2018).
Tatumn Time: Defender Tatumn Milazzo only made her professional debut in 2021, but she's already made quite the name for herself in the league. In 2022, just her second season, Milazzo started in all 22 Red Stars matches, falling just 29 minutes shy of Iron Woman status. Her performance on the pitch earned her a spot on NWSL Best XI of the Month in June 2022 and she was named to the 2022 NWSL Best XI Second Team. While Milazzo accumulated more minutes than any other Red Star throughout 2022, the defender also recorded a team-high 1,441 touches on the ball and 1,088 passes. Milazzo also led those categories for the Red Stars in 2023, with 1,856 touches and 942 passes. Though Milazzo has only appeared in two matches so far in 2024, the Orland Park native certainly made her presence known after earning her first start April 13. Her last-second goal-line clearance in the 32nd minute of Chicago's match against Angel City FC sent fans at SeatGeek Stadium into an uproar, then earned her NWSL Save of the Week honors for Week 4. Will 2024 become another Milazzo masterclass?
