PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC looks to earn a win in its season opener when it plays Charlotte Independence at 7 p.m. this Saturday, May 22 at Highmark Stadium. The match will be televised locally on 22 The Point and streamed via ESPN+.
Last time out, the Hounds (0-1-1) hung on for a 1-1 draw against Hartford Athletic, after they played the final 10 minutes and stoppage time down a man. Meanwhile, Charlotte (1-1-0) spoiled Charleston Battery's home opener, downing their Atlantic Division rival 3-0 for its first win of the season.
The Hounds are 2-4-2 in Highmark Stadium home openers, their last win coming in front of a crowd of 5,182 against Hartford in 2019. Prior to last year's 1-0 loss against Indy Eleven, the last time the Hounds lost a home opener was against Bob Lilley's Rochester Rhinos, 1-0, in 2016.
The two clubs didn't meet during the pandemic-affected 2020 season, but they are slated to play four times this season as Atlantic Division opponents. The Hounds are 0-6-5 all-time against Charlotte, marking the most meetings without a win vs. any opponent in club history.
The last time the two clubs met in Pittsburgh, they played to a 0-0 draw on May 25, 2019. The Hounds are one of the three winless teams in the Atlantic Division, along with Charleston and Loudoun.
