Austin Bold FC News Release

Austin, TX - Okay, let's try this again. Austin Bold is back at Bold Stadium after last week's 2-0 victory against Real Monarchs. Those three points were massive for Austin and jump-started their 2021 USL Championship campaign. After the inclement weather led to a false start over the weekend, The Bold looks to continue their winning ways tomorrow against El Paso Locomotive. Let's celebrate with $2 Beer Night. All 16oz domestic beers are only $2, and tickets start at just $15. Grab your spot here to Keep Austin Bold.

Defend The Cup

The inaugural Austin Bold FC season in 2019 had many memorable nights, but the moment that stands out the most was lifting the first Copa Tejas title. The Copa Tejas is a supporter-created trophy awarded to the Texas-based USL Championship club with the best head-to-head record against the other sides. Unfortunately, because the small regional groups of the shortened 2020 season saw the Texas clubs split up, a winner couldn't be decided.

This season, Copa Tejas is back, and head coach Marcelo Serrano has prioritized keeping the trophy in Austin. Tomorrow's match against El Paso Locomotive is the first step in The Bold's journey to defend the cup.

First Clean Sheet

The Bold has used a new defensive structure this year with a three-person backline consisting of Gustavo Rissi, Fabien Garcia, and Amobi Okugo. The new system took a few matches to gel, but last week fans started to see what head coach Marcelo Serrano is trying to put together. The defense won 72.2% of aerial duels, made ten interceptions, and had a 61.1% successful tackle rate. Goalkeeper Elliot Panicco added to those numbers with three big saves. They performed well as a unit, but Rissi was the standout of the night. The Brazilian defender made two crucial tackles early in the match to neutralize dangerous scoring chances for the visitors.

Undefeated El Paso

El Paso Locomotive head coach Mark Lowry will be happy with his squad's undefeated start and fourth place in the Mountain Division. El Paso's stingy defense is to thank for this successful start. Over three matches, the west Texas side has only let in one goal. The loss of star goalkeeper Logan Ketterer to MLS hasn't slowed them down. The backline has limited opponents to only six shots and racked up a successful 65.9% successful tackle rate. The worrying side is on the other side of the ball. With only two goals this season, El Paso is tied in the last place in the USL Championship with the least amount of goals scored. New addition Luis Solignac was brought in to add a spark to the attacking third but has yet to find his scoring touch in the Lowry system.
