Power Light Up As Curtains Close, Win 7-3

The Hagerstown Suns (29-41, 65-75) and West Virginia Power (34-35, 65-74) played to a hometown Power victory at Appalachian Power Park on Labor Day. West Virginia used four runs after the fifth inning to ice the Suns on the final game of the 2010 season to win 7-3.

Suns second round draft pick in 2010, LHP Sammy Solis got his second professional start and tossed 2.0 scoreless frames, allowing two base hits and fanning two.

Hagerstown LHP Paul Applebee, the eventual losing pitcher, went 4.0 innings and was knocked around to the tune of five earned runs and eleven hits.

The Power got a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run home run blast off the bat of LF Rogelios Noris to left center field. It was Noris' 15th of the season which scored 1B Kyle Morgan, who walked. An additional run scored on an RBI single by RF David Rubinstein lashed through the right side bringing home C Jairo Marquez, who doubled to left.

The Suns got on the board with their first run in the sixth frame using an RBI single by LF J.P. Ramirez back up the middle which scored SS Rick Hague, who tripled to deep center to make the contest 3-1.

After 4.0 frames from RHP Brett Lorin in which he did not allow a run, the Power called to the ‘pen and received 3.0 innings from LHP Justin Ennis (1-1). The winning pitcher surrendered five hits and one earned run.

In the bottom of the sixth stanza, West Virginia tallied two runs as 3B Andy Vazquez singled to right, and with one out SS Elevys Gonzalez got on board with a bunt single. 2B Jarek Cunningham drove home Vazquez with an RBI skip shot into center. CF Evan Chambers laced a single to left which summoned in Gonzalez to give the Power a 5-1 advantage.

Both clubs scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Hagerstown got theirs on a two-run home run by SS Rick Hague over the left field fence, his third of the season. West Virginia answered with a two-run bomb of their own off the lumber of Gonzalez. It was his second home run in two games as Gonzalez ripped a walk-off solo shot to win Game 3 for the Power on Sunday.
