Rodriguez Takes Home SAL Honors for 2nd Straight Week
September 7, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Drive will head into the Southern Divisional Championship Series, which begins Wednesday at Fluor Field, with the hottest hitter in the league on their side. It was announced on Tuesday that first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez was named the South Atlantic League's Player of the Week for August 30th through September 5th.
This is the third time that the 24-year-old has taken home weekly honors in 2010, more than any other player in the 14-team league. In addition, Rodriguez was just the fourth player to be selected consecutive weeks, joining Asheville first baseman Jared Clark, Lexington first baseman Kody Hinze, and Savannah pitcher Mark Cohoon.
Appearing in six of the Drive's seven games, Rodriguez hit .450 (9-for-20) which was third-best in the circuit over that span, while belting three homers and knocking in 12 runs. His RBI total paced all Sally League hitters and his trio of round trippers were tied for the league-high.
Highlighting Rodriguez's week was his performance on August 31st when he went 4-for-4 with a grand slam and drove in a career-best six runs at Charleston versus the RiverDogs, followed by his two homer, four RBI game on September 4th versus Hickory at Fluor Field.
Over the two week span in which he was named South Atlantic League Player of the Week twice, Rodriguez posted a .459 (17-for-37) average with five home runs, 17 RBI, and nine runs scored.
Signed as a minor league free agent during the offseason, the Columbian native led the Drive with 15 home runs this season, and also set a franchise record for any month when he drove in 29 runs in 25 games during August.
Prior to joining the Red Sox organization, Rodriguez spent the 2009 season in the independent Golden Baseball League where he was named the Rookie of the Year after leading Yuma with a .335 (95-for-284) average, six homers, six triples, 48 RBI, and 18 stolen bases in 74 games. He was also named the number 1 independent league prospect by Baseball America at the end of the season.
The Drive return to action on Wednesday, September 8th for Game 1 of the best-of-three Southern Divisional Championship Series with the Savannah Sand Gnats, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM from Fluor Field.
Tickets to Wednesday's game, as well as tickets for the South Atlantic League Championship Series (should the Drive advance) are currently on sale. For more information regarding single-game tickets, luxury accommodations, and group outings, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
