Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - In a wild, back-and-forth affair, the West Virginia Power scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning and held off the Greenville Drive late to come away with a 6-5 win on Saturday night at Fluor Field.
The Power's (2-1) rally started when Julio Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk against Yorvin Pantoja (0-1), and he came home on a double by Onil Pena to tie the game. After a Drive (1-2) error moved Pena up to third base, Joseph Rosa grounded into a fielder's choice that brought in Pena for the go ahead run.
The Drive had a chance in the ninth inning to tie the game up but came just short. Kervin Suarez smacked a double off the wall in right-center with one out, but Power reliever Dayeison Arias recorded the final two outs to notch the save.
West Virginia scored twice in the top of the first inning as Drive starter Yasel Santana issued four walks, including two with the bases loaded.
They added a run in the second inning on a Drive error to go up 3-0, but the Drive roared back for four runs to take the lead in the bottom half. Korby Batesole delivered an RBI single to put the Drive on the board, and Grant Williams followed with a single to center to bring home two more runs. Alan Marrero then lined a double into the left field corner to bring home Williams.
After the Power knotted the game up at four in the fifth on an RBI single by Manny Pazos, Devlin Granberg put the Drive up 5-4 in the seventh with an RBI hit to bring in Suarez, who reached on a two-out walk.
West Virginia pitchers struck out 19 Drive hitters on the night. Jamal Wade (1-0) got the win after punching out eight in three innings of relief.
Williams drove in two runs for Greenville.
The series finale between the two teams is set for 3:05 on Sunday afternoon at Fluor Field. Right-hander Chris Machamer will take the ball for the Drive, and left-hander Oliver Jaskie starts for the Power.
