September 14, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

An impressive slugging display by Joe Hastings and Travis Oglesby and clutch pitching by starter Klae Calvert and reliever Edison Reynoso added up to a 5-4 win for the North Shore Spirit over the New Jersey Jackals in the first game of the 2004 Northeast League Championship Series. The Spirit overcame being struck out 17 times by Jackals pitchers with 4 home runs.

Klae Calvert pitched 7 innings, allowing 4 runs and striking out 6 Jackals batters. Calvert allowed four runs, one in the first, two in the second, and then one in the eighth. Reynoso came on in the eighth inning and scrambled out of a two on and nobody out situation. In the ninth, Reynoso gave up walk and a hit, but struck out Northeast League MVP Wilton Veras and 2004 home run champ Chris Rowan to earn the save.

The Spirit opened the scoring in the first inning against Aaron Myers. Erick Mejias led off with a walk, and then, with one out, Joe Hastings hit his second home run of the playoffs to straight-away center field over the batter's eye to give the Spirit a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Jackals scraped across a run. Chris Conway knocked a one-out double to right-center field and scored on a Wilton Veras single.

The Jackals took the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the second, scoring 2 runs. Jay Laflair doubled down the left-field line with one out and moved to third on an infield single by Zach Smithlin. Conway knocked his second double of the game to score Laflair to tie the game. Kevin Grijak bounced out to first, scoring Smithlin and giving New Jersey the lead.

Then the Spirit showed off their power game. In the top of the sixth, Travis Oglesby hit a massive home run to left field to tie the game at 3. Then in the eighth, both Hastings and Oglesby homered for the second time in the game, back-to-back to give the club a 5-3 lead.

Calvert gave up 3 straight singles to start the bottom of the eighth to score a run and make it 5-4 Spirit. Edison Reynoso then came on in relief, stiffling the rally, with a sacrifice bunt, a strikeout, and a groundout.
