
Northeast League sells three All-League players

Durham, N.C. -- The Northeast League announced today that Brian Buchanan, Alex Santos and Paul Jacinto have all been sold to affiliated teams. Buchanan went to the Chicago Cubs, Santos to the Oakland Athletics and Jacinto to the San Diego Padres to push the NEL's total of sold players this year to 10. All three were members of the NEL's All-League team last week.
Buchanan, who pitched for Brockton, was the league's Left-handed Pitcher of the Year after going 11-5 with a 3.26 earned run average. In 118 2/3 innings pitched, he allowed 50 runs, 43 earned, and struck out 98, which ranked fourth in the league. His 11 wins were a league best. Buchanan was originally selected by the New York Yankees in the second round of the 1995 MLB Draft. He spent seven years with the organization, making it as high as Double-A Norwich in 2002. This was his first season with the Rox.
Santos, who pitched for Quebec, was the NEL Relief Pitcher of the Year after collecting a league-high 22 saves. In 31 appearances, all out of the bullpen, he went 2-1 with a 1.06 ERA and struck out 49, while walking five. Santos allowed only four runs, three of which came in one appearance, all season as teams were hitting .161 against him. Santos was originally selected by the Devil Rays in the fourth round of the 1999 MLB Draft. He compiled a record of 24-28 during his stint, making it as high as Double-A Orlando in 2002 and 2003. This is his first season in the NEL.
Jacinto, who also pitched for Quebec, earned Rookie Pitcher of the Year honors after posting a 7-0 record with a 0.90 earned run average. Jacinto tossed two complete games, including a shutout, allowed 11 runs, six earned, and struck out 37, while walking eight for Les Capitales. Opponents hit .201 against him. Jacinto was named the Rawlings Player of the Month for August and was chosen as the Pitcher of the Week on August 2. He pitched for Brigham Young University this past spring.
