September 8, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
CHARLESTON, WV (August 5, 2009) - Appalachian Power Park will host the first annual "Yuengs & Wings Blues Thing" on Sunday, September 13, 2009. The event, produced by the West Virginia Power and West Virginia Blues Society, will showcase one regional blues act and three national acts.
"Our commitment to the community when we purchased the Alley Cats in 2004 was to find and create events that utilize Appalachian Power Park throughout the summer and the Yuengs & Wings Blues Thing is an incredible addition to those efforts" said Andy Milovich, Executive Vice President. "Charleston has a very strong music community and has shown an appreciation for all genres of music. I've grown to appreciate how lucky we are to have Mountain Stage and the other live performances that appear regularly at the Clay Center, Civic Center, Municipal Auditorium and other venues around the community. Our goal is to build on that strength and combine Charleston's appreciation for music and its passion for community events to create something special."
The Yuengs & Wings Blues Thing will feature the following:
Hubert Sumlin & The Nighthawks Sumlin is a living guitar legend that grew up playing guitar with harmonica great James Cotton. He became Howlin' Wolf's lead guitarist in 1949 at the age of 18. Ranked ahead of guitar legends Derek Trucks, Angus Young, Neil Young, and Eddie Van Halen, Sumlin is 64th on Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists of All-Time. Sumlin has been cited as an inspiration and influence by Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Carlos Santana, John Mayer, Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Rolling Stones and countless others. He's a Blues Music Hall of Famer.
The Nighthawks have entertained audiences all over the world for over 30 years with their unique blend of blues, rock, soul, R&B, rockabilly and swing. They've played along side legends that include Muddy Waters, BB King, Greg Allman, Pinetop Perkins, John Lee Hooker and others.
Super Chikan & The Fighting Cocks James "Super Chikan" Johnson grew up on farms in the Mississippi Delta where his fondness of Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, and farm-raised chickens inspired the development of the Blues Music Awards' 1998 Best New Artist Award Nominee. Art Tipaldi, Senior Editor for Blues Revue and BluesWax, said "Chikan has internalized the deepest music that hangs in the air every day. As ambassador for the Delta blues, there is a happiness and joy that comes through in everything he plays."
Zac Harmon The Jackson, Mississippi, native is a true disciple of the music that emanated from the city's historic Farish Street district. His 2002 release Live at Babe & Ricky's Inn won Harmon the Blues Foundation's prestigious International Blues Challenge title of "Best Unsigned Band." His follow-up album garnered major national airplay and he was voted "Best New Blues Artist" in the inaugural XM Nation Music Awards and the "Best New Artist Debut" by the Blues Music Awards. The Blues Revue magazine has identified Zac as "one of 10 artists that represent the future of the blues."
The Catch Blues Band The Catch Blues Band, based in Wheeling, WV, is the tri-state's hardest working blues band and known for their edgy Classic Southern Rock and Blues sound. The band's music encompasses several genres, including jazz, reggae, and the blues, as well as good old-American Rock and Roll.
