EDMONTON - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings dropped game one of the North American League championship series to the Edmonton Capitals by a score of 7-1 on Thursday night at TELUS Field in Edmonton.

Edmonton starting pitcher Lou Pote dominated the WhiteWings, striking out 11 and allowing no earned runs through eight innings. The one run the WhiteWings did score against Pote, a former Major League pitcher, was unearned.

The Caps take a 1-0 series lead over the WhiteWings in a best-of-seven series that will be played entirely in Edmonton.

The Capitals got on the board in the first inning and they never looked back. An RBI single from Todd Linden to give them a 1-0 lead.

The Caps put two more runs on the board in the third and fourth to take a 3-0 lead, but they opened the game in the fifth, scoring three times to take a 6-1 lead. Brent Metheny started the big fifth inning with a two-run homerun. JD Closser followed up the homerun with a triple. Carlos Duncan then hit a sacrifice fly deep into centerfield to score Closser.

Those were all the runs the Capitals needed as Pote shutdown the WhiteWings' bats.

Game two starts at 8:05 CDT at TELUS Field. Chandler Barnard is expected to start for the WhiteWings.
