Posey Brilliant as Quakes Blank 66ers 2-0

June 3, 2006 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

RANCHO CUCAMONGA-Micah Posey worked into the eighth inning in his longest start since 2003 and the Quakes made a first-inning RBI groundout by Michael Collins hold up as Rancho Cucamonga recorded its fourth shutout of the year in a 2-0 win over Inland Empire before 6,069 fans at the Epicenter Friday night. The win pushed the Quakes back over .500 at 28-27, while Inland Empire fell to 33-21.

Posey allowed back-to-back singles to open the game, but came back with three straight strikeouts to get out of the first inning unscathed. Nate Sutton then continued his hot hitting with a base hit to center to start the bottom of the first and eventually came in on Collins' RBI grounder to short to make it 1-0.

Posey took that lead and ran with it, getting double plays from the Quakes defense in the second and fourth and picking Josh Womack off of first base in the fifth. Posey also benefited from a sterling defensive play by shortstop Sean Rodriguez in the sixth, as Rodriguez ranged to his right on a ball hit by Matt Tuiasosopo, made a sliding stop, and then fired to third to cut down Mike Wilson. Naturally, the 66ers ended up loading the bases later in the sixth but Posey got Chris Colton to pop up on the first he saw to end the inning. Kevin Lynch then stranded a runner at second in the eighth before the Quakes got an insurance run, as rehabbing Darin Erstad walked with two out in the eighth and scored on a ground-rule double by Pat Reilly. Kevin Jepsen then nailed down a perfect ninth.

Posey (2-5) got his first win as a member of the starting rotation, scattering seven hits in 7.1 innings with three walks and four strikeouts. It was his longest outing since going eight innings for Cedar Rapids June 30, 2003 against Fort Wayne. Aaron Jensen (0-1) allowed a run and three hits in four innings for the loss, with two walks and a season-high six strikeouts. Jepsen's save was his seventh of the year. Sutton led the offense with two hits and a run scored, while Erstad went 0-3 with a walk and a run.

Game two in this three-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday and will feature an appearance by the ZOOperstars! The game will be carried live on television on channel KVMD, over the air on KWRM-AM 1370, and on-line at www.rcquakes.com. Anthony Ortega (0-1, 2.08 ERA) will start for the Quakes and lefty Robert Rohrbaugh (4-0, 1.33 ERA) will start for the Sixers. For more information, please call the Quakes at (909) 481-5000.
