Stockton Ports News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - One night removed from a 12-inning victory, the Stockton Ports offense looked sluggish on Sunday at Municipal Stadium. The Ports had just one run-producing hit as the San Jose Giants used a strong start from Jose Reyes (2-4) to propel them to a 6-2 win over Stockton.
San Jose scored the opening run in the bottom of the first inning off ports starter Raul Alcantara (0-1). With two outs, Ryder Jones doubled and scored on an ensuing single by Angel Villalona to make it a 1-0 game.
The run in the first was the only run allowed by Alcantara, who went four strong innings and allowed three hits while striking out one as he suffered his first loss of the season.
Kyle Finnegan came on to pitch the fifth in his first relief appearance of the season. With one out, Finnegan gave up a single to John Polonius, who went on to steal second and score on an ensuing double by Jeff Arnold. Two batters later with one on and two outs, Christian Arroyo delivered a two-run homer to make it a 4-0 Giants lead.
Reyes, the Giants starter, kept Stockton out of the run column and scattered just two hits over his first six innings of work. The Ports did get into the run column in the seventh. Jake Nottingham opened the inning with a single and, with two outs, B.J. Boyd kept the frame alive with a single to right. Yairo Munoz came up next and delivered a two-run double to left to cut the Giants lead to 4-2 and knock Reyes from the game as Tyler Rogers came on to strike out Michael Soto and end the inning.
Reyes picked up the victory, going 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three.
Finnegan came back out to pitch the bottom of the seventh and walked Jones and Jeff Kobernus, putting two on with two out. Villalona came up and doubled to right field to score both runners and get the San Jose lead back to four runs at 6-2 while knocking Finnegan from the contest. Finnegan went two-and-two-thirds innings and allowed five runs on five hits in his first relief appearance of the season.
Trevor Bayless pitched the final inning-and-a-third scoreless for Stockton while Rogers pitched the final two-and-a-third innings for San Jose, including a perfect ninth to close out the contest.
After dropping three of four to the Giants, the Ports head to Visalia to begin a three-game series with the Rawhide on Monday. Dylan Covey (6-6, 3.69 ERA) makes the start in the series opener for Stockton, opposed by Visalia right-hander Anthony Banda (6-8, 3.73 ERA). First pitch from Recreation Ballpark is set for 7 p.m. PDT.
