Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif.-The Ports were shutout eight times in the course of 140 games last season-they have been shutout four times in 19 games this season.
Stockton (4-15) totaled just three hits in their series opener against the Visalia Rawhide (14-5), in a 6-0 loss on Tuesday. Matt Spencer, Raul Padron and Frank Martinez all singled in the game.
The Ports pitching staff allowed six runs, only four earned, as the Stockton fielders made two errors in the game. Scott Hodsdon took the loss, and is now 1-2 on the season with a 5.89 ERA. Hodsdon tossed 5.1 innings, and allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits. He gave up a two-run home run to Kyle Greene. The Ports relief staff was strong, pitching 3.2 innings, and allowing one unearned run.
Pat McAnaney picked up his third win of the season for Visalia, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just three hits and fanning seven batters. Leyson Septimo and Chase Christianson were lights out for Visalia, allowing no hits in four combined innings.
Visalia jumped on the board in the first inning, as Ollie Linton scored on a sacrifice fly by Collin Cowgill.
The Rawhide added two more runs in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Greene got things started with a single, and Derrick Walker followed him on base with a single as well. A single by Manny Ferrer brought home Greene and Walker, although Ferrer was only credited with one RBI. Ferrer was put out at second base in a 9-4-6 play for the second out of the inning. After a single by Linton, Easley grounded out to end the inning.
Visalia brought home two more runs in the fourth inning, on a two-run home run by Greene. It was his second homer of the season.
In the eighth inning, an RBI single by designated hitter Konrad Schmidt brought home Taylor Harbin, who originally reached base on an error by Ports shortstop Martinez. Schmidt's run was the sixth and final run for Visalia.
The Ports had several opportunities with baserunners, but were unable to capitalize. Spencer and Padron hit back-to-back singles in the first inning, but second baseman Larry Cobb struck out to end the Stockton threat.
The Ports didn't get a hit again until the fifth inning, when Martinez singled safely with one out.
Stockton led off the seventh inning with two walks, but the next three batters all flew out to end the inning. The Ports put two men on base in the ninth inning with two outs, but Martinez was called out on strikes to end the game.
The Ports will take on Visalia for the second of a three-game series at Banner Island Ballpark at 7:05 on Wednesday, April 29. RHP Scott Mitchinson (0-0, 2.30) gets the starting nod for the Ports, while RHP Josh Collmenter (2-1, 2.81) will start for the Rawhide. Wednesday is the first day of Fashion Week, and fans are encouraged to participate in the Jorts with the Ports promotion.
