Portland Winterhawks News Release

Hawks Happenings On The Ice:

The Winterhawks' game against the Spokane Chiefs today at Veterans Memorial Coliseum has been moved by an hour to 4 p.m. The Coliseum's curtains will be open for the game, and by moving the start time from 3 to 4 p.m., it will allow glare from the sun to be completely off the playing surface.

The Portland Winterhawks clinched the U.S. Division title Saturday with Spokane's loss, giving the team their second division title in three years. The Hawks head into today's matchup with a 27-point lead over the Chiefs in the standings, and a 28-point lead over the Tri-City Americans.

Portland also leads the Western Conference by nine points over the Kelowna Rockets, and has an eight-point lead over the Edmonton Oil Kings in the league's overall standings. Edmonton will be in Portland next Wednesday for a rematch of last year's WHL championship series.

With Brendan Leipsic leading the WHL with 103 points, and Nic Petan second with 101, the Hawks appear poised to have the league's leading scorer for the first time since the 1996-97 season, when Todd Robinson topped the WHL with 134 points.

The Hawks have won 23 road games so far this season, just one shy of the team record with eight road games still to play. Portland won 24 road games in the 1980-81 and 2010-11 seasons. The next road victory will also break the franchise record for points on the road in a season. With a record of 23-3-1-1 away from home this season the team has 48 points, one shy of the 49 in both the 80-81 and 10-11 seasons.

Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:

The Portland Winterhawks Booster Club will be collecting new and gently-used blankets, and new socks, at today's game for Union Gospel Mission.
