Portland to the Pros: Cody McLeod Announces His Retirement After 17 Seasons

Portland, Ore. - After 17 seasons, former Portland Winterhawks great Cody McLeod announced his retirement from playing professional hockey and has accepted a position with the Minnesota Wild to be a Player Development Coach.

McLeod, an undrafted forward, played 1018 career games across the NHL and AHL, accumulating 187 points (103G-84A) and 2,271 penalty minutes. Most recently, he spent the 2021-22 season captaining the Iowa Wild, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Minnesota Wild, and was the longest-tenured Winterhawk still playing professionally.

The Binscarth, Man. native spent the majority of his playing career with the Colorado Avalanche, serving as one of the team's alternate captains from 2011 to 2016. His time in the NHL also included stops with the Nashville Predators and New York Rangers.

During a WHL career which spanned from 2001 to 2005, McLeod recorded 137 points in 247 career WHL games, all with the Winterhawks. He won a U.S. Division Championship with Portland during his rookie season in 2001-02 and is currently tied for 30th on the Hawks all-time games played leader board.

The Portland Winterhawks would like to congratulate Cody on a terrific on-ice career and are excited to watch him influence and develop future generations of hockey stars.
