Pool Named IHL Goaltender of the Week
February 2, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, MI.--- Having concluded a highly-successful opening month of the new calendar year of 2009 with a superb 14(9-3-2) record, the surging Muskegon Lumberjacks of the International Hockey League are beginning to reap some of the many benefits attached to not only their strong January showing but also their vastly-improved commitment to team-oriented defense.
On this date, the IHL, in conjunction with the Lumberjacks, has announced that CLAYTON POOL has been acclaimed as SOUTHERN SPORTS SUPPLY / IHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK for the week of January 26th through February 1st.
POOL, 30, has been magnificent since his return to the Lumberjacks lineup following an extended period of time on the injured list in this 2008-09 season. The fifth year pro from Abbotsford, B. C., has emerged prominently as to the major reason for the 'Jacks better defensive effort and overall superior performance.
Having made 16-consecutive appearances in the Muskegon goal along with 14-actual starts in that span, the Lumberjacks human puck barricade was absolutely brilliant in his 3-games' work week as goal guardian divine. Compiling a 3(2-1-0) record, the former standout from the U. of Alberta grudgingly surrendered a minuscule 4-GA while rebuking 90 of 94-SOG. For his star-studded week, he authored a miserly and microscopic 1.34 GAA and a scintillating .957 SPCT.
In backstopping his team to a pair of impressive weekend victories in as many nights the past weekend, Pool was utterly in the "zero" zone. Following a rather undeserved 2-1 shortfall Tuesday night at league-leading Port Huron, the Lumberjacks veteran netminder was never better. In a memorable enormous performance Friday night at Kalamazoo, he celebrated his 200th Muskegon career game with a 5-0 shutout triumph over the archrivals, Wings, making 33-saves. It was Pool's 9th career shutout, an all-new club record for career shutouts with Muskegon.
Then the very next night, on home ice, for a second straight night, he was hailed the game's #1 Star as he spearheaded the 'Jacks to an emphatic 4-2 conquest of the Flint Generals. Pool's bid for a second consecutive shutout was sabotaged at the 15:54 mark of the third period with his team comfortably on top, 4-0. It was the first goal surrendered by Pool and company since the 6:59 mark of the first period back on Tuesday night in Port Huron. The Pool shutout streak endured for an amazing 168:55.
In his last 4-starts, Pool has carded a stellar record of 4(3-1-0) with a stingy and sterling 1.46 GAA and masterful .950 SPCT.
For the season, he has skyrocketed meteorically to #3 in the IHL with an ever-eroding GAA of 2.92. His winning percentage of .767 through a record of 15(10-2-3) and his SPCT of .921 are both the best in the league.
Pool is the first Lumberjacks goaltender to achieve the Southern Sports Supply / IHL Goaltender of the Week award thus far this season.
