Icehawks And Komets Trade Shutouts

ROCHESTER, MI--- A much anticipated back-to-back showdown between the first-place Port Huron Icehawks and second-place Fort Wayne Komets ended with both teams trading shutouts Friday and Saturday night. Port Huron entered Friday night four points ahead of Fort Wayne. Port Huron rookie goaltender Ryan Mior recorded his second shutout Friday in just three starts, turning aside all 25 shots he faced from the Komets. The shutout was the fourth for the Icehawks this season. On the other side, it was only the second time Fort Wayne has been held scoreless this season, with the first being on November 21st, also against the Icehawks. Port Huron won the game by a score of 4-0.

Saturday night, the roles were reversed and it was all Fort Wayne with goaltender Sebastien Laplante earning his first shutout and fifth win of the season. He was starting his second game since being activated from the 60-day injured reserve. Laplante made a total of 26 saves, holding the Icehawks scoreless for the first time this season. Fort Wayne earned the 4-0 victory over Port Huron, snapping a 12-game unbeaten road streak for the Icehawks. Port Huron still holds a four point lead over the second-place Komets.

The Bloomington PrairieThunder have been storming through as of late, notching points in their last seven games, recording 12 out of 14 possible points in that span. They have not lost in regulation since January 16th in a 7-4 loss in Muskegon, with four of their last seven games going into a shootout. Helping lead the pack for the PrairieThunder has been their potent top line of Jon Booras, Henry Kuster and Jan Jas. In the last seven games, the trio has accounted for 10 of Bloomington's 22 goals.

AROUND THE "I"

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (3-0-0-0) - The PrairieThunder are currently on a seven-game unbeaten streak (5-0-0-2) , which ties a franchise record set late last season. Bloomington has stopped 32 of the last 36 power play attempts by opponents in the last seven games. Jan Jas scored the third hat trick in PrairieThunder history against his former teammates at Flint on January 30th. Since joining forces to comprise the top line 12 games ago, Jon Booras, Henry Kuster and Jas have combined to score 47 points. The trio has scored 20 goals with 27 assists. Jon Booras is one point shy of tying his career record for most points scored in a season. He currently sits with 56 points in 41 games (23 goals, 33 assists). Last season he had 57 points (29 goals, 28 assists) in 74 games. The third-year player also recently went over the 150 mark for career points. He is at 153 points in 188 career games.

Flint Generals - (0-2-0-0) - Center Greg Bullock scored his 800th career point on January 23rd vs. Port Huron. Jordan Boman and Travis Hanson scored their first goals of the season last week. Right wing Steve Rymsha (195) is only five goals away from career goal #200. Forward John DiPace is on pace to play in pro game #400 Saturday night in Muskegon, he is also five points shy of 300 in his career. Right wing Rob Voltera played in career game #550 in Bloomington last Friday night. Flint had only one road victory in January. Defenseman Ryan Jorde will play in career game #350 in Fort Wayne this Friday night. Defenseman A.J. Bozoian has appeared in 192 pro games, his 200th pro game will be on February 22nd vs. Muskegon. Flint was 4-2-1-2 in one goal games in January. On the road in January, the Generals were 1-4-1-2; six of those games were decided by two goals or less.

Fort Wayne Komets - (1-1-0-1) - Tracking Dupuis: Veteran defenseman Guy Dupuis has 95 career goals and 497 assists since his career began in 1990 with Adirondack in the AHL. The 19-year pro, skating his 12th season with the Komets, ranks third on the all-time list of regular season games played as a Komet with 774 and second overall with 838 (including playoff games). If Dupuis maintains pace with the season, he could break Eddie Long's record of most career games played (801) on April 4th, and could become the all-time leader in Komet games played (regular season and playoffs combined) by topping Terry Pembroke's mark of 864 on April 3rd when he skates his 865th game. Dupuis, last year's IHL Defenseman of the Year, has appeared in all 45 Fort Wayne games to date this season. Holladay hits 100: Rookie defenseman Jay Holladay marked his 100th pro game Wednesday at Bloomington. Komets attract over 15,000 for the weekend: The Komets attracted a total attendance of 15,586 for the two home games played over the weekend. Saturday's crowd of 8,307 marked the 69th time the Komets have attracted an 8,000+ crowd since the renovation of the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in 2002.

Kalamazoo Wings - (0-2-0-0) - Kalamazoo finished January with a record of 6-7-0-0. The month was the K-Wings second losing month of the season (October). Kalamazoo was shutout four times in January, meaning they were 6-3-0-0 in games they scored a goal. Joel Martin ranks second in the IHL in GAA with 2.84 and leads all goaltenders in save percentage at 0.917. Kalamazoo played their first-ever McDonald's Golden Ice Game last Saturday, a 4-2 loss to Bloomington. The K-Wings are riding a season-high two-game home losing streak. Kalamazoo will play four games this week with the games being home and home series with Port Huron and Bloomington. Rod Aldoff is one goal shy of 100 in his career. The K-Wings snapped an 0 for 20 drought on the power-play with a Glenn Detulleo goal last Saturday. The K-Wings finished January 4 for 53 on the power-play. Kalamazoo is 6-1-0-0 in road games when they lead after the first period. Jordan Little is on an IHL current-high five straight games with at least one penalty. Tommy Lange leads all IHL rookeis in both goals (15) and shots (145).

Muskegon Lumberjacks - (2-1-0-0) - The Lumberjacks completed a strong month of January with a record of 9-2-1-1. The nine wins for January are the most earned by the Jacks in a single month so far this season. At home this season, the Lumberjacks lead the league with 15 victories with the best overall home record of 15-6-1-1. With the 5-0 win over Kalamazoo Friday, the Lumberjacks have extracted victories from every member club on foreign ice this season. The Muskegon power play, ranked first in the IHL, continues to generate, delivering a four for nine weekend for a 44.5% rating. The Jacks are 18 for the last 49, giving them a 36.7% in that span. Goaltender Clayton Pool compiled a shutout streak this week consisting of 168:55, spanning the 6:59 mark of the first period Tuesday night in Port Huron, to the 15:54 mark of the third period Saturday night against Flint. Pool has appeared in 16 straight games, starting 14 of those contests.

Port Huron Icehawks - (2-1-0-0) - The Icehawks have blanked their opponent four times this season, which is the most of any team in the league, and have been shutout just once. Saturday's loss at Fort Wayne snapped a 12 game road unbeaten streak for Port Huron. The loss was their first in regulation on the road since November 27th. They still hold the league's best road record at 15-6-1-1. Head Coach and General Manager Stan Drulia picked up a pair of milestones over the weekend. He earned his 200th win as a coach on Friday in Fort Wayne and coached his 400th game on Saturday in Fort Wayne. Center Jason Chafe reached a career milestone last week. He played in his 200th career game on Tuesday versus Muskegon. The Icehawks have recorded the fewest goals against (127) and shots against (1,291) in the league this season and also average the league's lowest goals against (2.82) and shots against per game (28.69). The Icehawks February schedule is dominated by meetings with the Kalamazoo Wings and the Bloomington PrairieThunder. They play Kalamazoo four times and Bloomington five times this month, meet Muskegon once and Flint once. The Icehawks do not face rival Fort Wayne again until March 13.
