Pollihan To Pursue New Job Opportunity
January 15, 2003 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Harrisburg Heat News Release
Harrisburg, PA - Harrisburg Heat Vice President of Soccer Operations Jim Pollihan has announced that he has accepted a managerial position with Friendship Community Center, based in Lower Paxton Township. Pollihan's last day with the Heat will be this Friday, January 17.
"I would like to thank Harrisburg Heat ownership for giving me the opportunity to work with this fine organization," said Pollihan. "I will cherish the memories of every Heat win and numerous sold out games. I wish the Heat the best of luck in their pursuit of an MISL championship."
Pollihan has been with the Heat since 1991, when he was named the expansion team's first head coach after several seasons as an assistant coach and television personality for the Baltimore Blast of the original MISL. After guiding the first-year franchise to a 24-16 record, Pollihan was named the NPSL Coach of the Year for 1991-92. The native of St. Louis went on to post a 155-125 regular season record (.554 winning percentage) through the 1997-98 season and guided the Heat to the NPSL Finals in 1994-95. He left the bench after the '97-98 campaign to assume his front office role.
"I've worked with Jim for 12 years - that's longer than I've ever worked with anyone," said Heat General Manager Gregg Cook, who also started with the club in 1991. "We've both been here since the beginning. I've learned a lot from him about the indoor game, and it will be strange to not have him around here. We'll miss him, and I'm sure he'll do well in his new opportunity."
Pollihan's place in the annals of indoor soccer history was ensured from the start: he scored the first-ever MISL goal on December 22, 1978, as his New York Arrows defeated the Cincinnati Kids 7-2 at Nassau Coliseum. The graduate of Quincy (IL) College enjoyed a lengthy professional career, which began in 1976 with the Rochester Lancers of the outdoor North American Soccer League and ended after he won an MISL championship with the 1983-84 Blast. Pollihan also recorded 16 caps with the U.S. National Team.
Cook will temporarily assume the majority of Pollihan's day-to-day front office duties.
