Polar Twins\' woes continue

December 6, 2004 - SPHL (SPHL)
Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release

The Winston-Salem Polar Twins are still looking for ways to solve their SPHL opponents. Last week, the Polar Twins went 0-2, giving up 13 goals and a total of 114 shots in the two games they played.

Friday, December 3 @ Knoxville: On Friday night, the Polar Twins traveled to Knoxville for a rematch of their previous game against the Ice Bears. The Polar Twins had a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission, courtesy of a Shaun Aebig power play tally at 19:36 of the first. Steve Lajoie and new addition Nobumasa Kinugasa had the assists on the goal.

Knoxville came back in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals for the 3-1 lead after two periods of play. Marcus Forsberg scored first for the Ice Bears, netting his seventh goal of the season. K.J. Voorhees put Knoxville up 2-1 with his 13th goal of the season at 10:46 of the frame. Kevin Swider added the third Ice Bears' goal of the period with less than two minutes remaining to give Knoxville the two-goal advantage.

It was more Knoxville in the third period, as the Ice Bears kept peppering Winston-Salem goaltender Nathan Grobins with shots. In fact, it was the fourth straight game the Polar Twins allowed 50 or more shots on net. K.C. Caudill put Knoxville up 4-1 on the power play at the 5:22 mark of the third period. Todd MacIsaac put the game out of reach for Winston-Salem with his third goal of the season and a 5-1 Ice Bears lead. Chester Gallant added a second goal for the Polar Twins but it was too little too late as the Ice Bears skated on to the 5-2 victory.

Saturday, December 4 @ Fayetteville: Saturday night the Polar Twins visited Fayetteville to take on their cross-state rivals, the Fayetteville FireAntz. Both teams entered the game tied for last place in the SPHL with eight points. It didn't take the FireAntz long to get on the board as Shawn Roed scored only 1:18 into the game to put Fayetteville up 1-0. Dean Jackson then made it 2-0 Fayetteville at the 8:08 mark of the first frame, which is where the score stayed heading into the first intermission. Also in the first period, Fayetteville set a new SPHL and franchise record for shots in a period with 32.

Fayetteville added four more goals in the second frame, for a 6-0 lead heading into the intermission. Bryan Lachapelle's power play tally at 7:44 made it 3-0. Steve Roberts then added two, one shorthanded, to give the FireAntz the 5-0 lead. Captain Mike Fournier made it 6-0 when he drilled a screened shot past Jomar Cruz for his first goal of the season.

The FireAntz added salt to the wound, adding two more goals in the third period. Lachapelle put his second goal of the night into the net at the 2:36 mark of the period for a 7-0 game. Sean Edwards capped the scoring with Fayetteville's eighth unanswered goal, the winger's second of the season, for the 8-0 final.
